Hello,

I was wondering if you can give me some advice. I have a tame 2 year old female budgie in one cage. I recently purchased a 2 month old male budgie. Ideally I would like the male to talk and be tame also. Right know they are in two seperate cages in two seperate rooms. I've had the male for about a week and he is starting to step up on my finger. I like to have them keep each other company when we are not around. I do not know when it would be best to : put both in the same cage, keep them seperated but next to each other, same cage with a divider, or completly two different rooms. Currently I let them interact when the male is out flying around and they seem to get along, but I want the male to bond with us first. What would be best and how long should I wait? Also putting in the same cage will not mean they will breed, right?
Thanks

Hmmm, wait a bit long with them being in separate rooms, make him tamer, then put them next to each other, then together, if they get along.
When they are together, if they try and breed, remove the male. He is way too young to breed.

Good Luck!

I know its a hot debate, but I can not decide whether to clip my new budgies wings. He seems so content flying, but I get worried that he'll freak and slam into a window. Also what is the best way to clip birds toe nails with grabbing him or her? thanks:cool:

Have a look around for info on clipping toe nails, or start a new thread.

As for clipping wings... I'm personally against it as I like budgies to have natural flight. You decide for yourself. :)

No I clip all my birds wings..since my budgie (proven breeder) flew away and never came back I think that clipping the wings is just a safetey issue!

But if a budgie had clipped wings, he wouldn't be able to fly away from danger.

3 of mine have flown away and they flew away from danger. At least they'd live longer then.

What sort of danger would you have in your house Amy!You dont even have a dog or cat!Your hamster isnt going to do any damage?

Aha. True. But then all the more reason to have wings not clipped so they can fly away from danger, ie, dog, cat in your house.

My dog wouldnt hurt a fly....and my cat has his own room..so the only danger is the outside world and you could easily mistaken that a window or door was closed and off go's your bird.Thats when you have to worry for days and it never comes back...:( I understand yes cliping thier wings is sort of mean its like choping a humans legs off so they couldnt walk. You know all animals and capitvity do not have freedom...birds locked in cages, fish only can swim in a contained tank not an ocean or lake, rabbits caged...think about it they might as well be safe than experience the real world.:)

Howdie,
Ok, first, you should have kept them in seperate rooms to quarantine your new bird for at least 30 days. Since you have already introduced them, we will move on. When it comes to training, it usually depends on the bird. I know people that have had success having 2 birds in the same room, but most seem to have better luck when the bird is alone. As for the wing clipping, that also depends on the bird, and also how comfortable you are with him. If he is doing well with his lessons, and not flying off everytime, then keep him unclipped. In the past I have had better luck with clipped birds. Just think, you can clip now, train, and then dont clip after his next moult. As for the housing, that will depend on your hen. She might be willing to share her home, but she will be the deciding factor. I would first let her into his cage, not him into her cage. Usually letting them hang out and hop onto the top etc., they will figure things out. As for the breeding, even if you have them in seperate cages, but they come out & play together, they can still mate, but I wouldnt worry about that. Really the only way to guarantee they dont, is to keep them apart, but thats no fun, lol
I hope i have answered some of your questions.

Well I decided to clip, because I did have two birds hit windows and suffer brain damage. I just felt if he got scared he might go into a window and it only takes once, but thanks for all you comments.
By the way 24 Budgies, now that's a budgie expert!!! LOL
Thanks again,
