View Full Version : Downtime in the coming days...

If you've seen the special announcement at the top of the forum home, I'm sure you're aware that there might be some downtime in the coming days. This is because I'm switching web hosts.

Right now I'm trying to switch over some of my smaller sites, which can have a lot of downtime. Obviously, this site cannot have a lot of downtime as it's an active community. Because of this, I intend to transfer this site last so I know exactly what I'm doing by the time it's our turn to transfer. I plan to do this on a weekend while I'll be home all day (I'm not home during the day during the week) because, well, for technical reasons most probably won't understand. So I won't get into that. But just expect the transfer to happen either this weekend or next weekend. It will most likely happen one of these days.

When the transfer occurs, you can expect about a full day of downtime. First, I have to switch the domain's settings so they point to my new host. This takes several hours. I can't do anything until this is complete. When this is complete, I then have to set up the domain on my new host. This will take several hours, depending on how fast the host moves (I think). Once this is done, if everything goes as planned, I'll simply upload all the files and the database to the new host and the transfer will be complete. All in all, I expect this to take a full day, which is why I want to do this on a weekend (as I want to move to the next step in the process as soon as the previous one is complete to minimize downtime).

Once I transfer my next-biggest site, Talk Camp, to the new host, I'll have a much better idea of how long this transfer should take, and I'll update again then.

Until then, if you have any questions, you may post them in this thread and I'll do my best to answer them.

(And just so this question isn't asked a thousand times, no information or data will be lost in the transfer. I will shut down the forums prior to the transfer so no new posts will be made while the transfer is occuring.)

Geez Dave I get back from camp all ready to share all of my exciting stories and TalkCamp is down. I guess you think making things better around this place is good or something. Haha. Just kidding, thanks for all your hard work!! We all really do appreciate it.

Sorry Kiwi! :D I'm transfering my websites, as I'm sure you're aware by now. But I'm having troubles with the host I'm moving too so I might have to find another host before I move my other sites!

Aww I remember when this site was just a little fledling message board, hopeing to oneday reach the size of big, bad Talk Camp. Now look how the roles have changed. Granted, most of our population does go do the summer camp thing right about now so posts have more than dwindled. But I am impressed at what everyone here has made of this board. I'll drop in every few weeks or so to read some posts and there are nearly 2000 new ones just about every time. So good job Talk Budgies members. You have made this board an amazing bank of knowledge about our feathered friends and anything that could go with them. Keep up the good work.

If things go as planned it will most likely happen on Saturday. No promises though.
