View Full Version : English versus Am. budgie
I have an opportunity to buy a very young, just weaned English budgie from a great breeder w/in the next few days.
I had English/show budgies before but now have only "regular", small guys. I read that taming an English budgie is easier. Since I never really worked on taming any of my keets except for a step up command, I am wondering if this is true. Any opinion?
The reason I am asking is that I want this new Eng. budgie to be strictly a companion pet, housed in a separate cage, away from my other fids, so that he does not bond to my other fids and becomes very, very tame.
Thanks.

Hi Nika~
Oh how I envy you! Congrats on your new English Budgie!:) I don't know a lot about English Budgies as I've only had American so I have no idea if they are easier to train.
I do know that we have a few members who have English Budgies who may be able to help you.
Be sure to post pics of your new guy!:)

Yes, it's true about English easier to tame than the American/wild type/smaller budgies. It is part of their breeding. Cocks make WAY better pets than hens. My good friend and budgie judge Ferd W in Washington state was telling me once that he and his show partner set up to sell their excess budgies at a bird mart. They kept hearing people grumbling as they walked by that there were not any hand tamed budgies at this event. The 2 guys looked at each other, clipped the wings on 2 male budgies and worked with them for about 30 mins. They had the birds stepping up and stepping off their fingers and ended up selling these birds for considerably more than the birds in their stock cages. The did this all day long and made more of a profit than expected!

Congrats on your new little friend!
I heard englishes are mellower than Standards. Perhaps because they were origionally bred for show and since show birds need to be handled by judges they made them more mellow.

Wonder if that would go for a budgie who's only partially English, Shadow is part english and he is most definetly more mellow, calm etc. then my american budgies, he also would rather be by himself and just sit there and chirp, and sing his songs and look out the window
he was really enjoying it today he watched it snow, while he sang his lil song
but he still doesn't want any one to touch him
Thank you for your input.
I am still thinking if I should bring him home or not. Will keep you updated.
Thanks again.

I can surely vouch for the calmness of English budgies. Its part of what breeders keep in mind when looking for the next breeding pair. From what im learning, judges look for that trait too. And it sure helps with training.
