I was just wondering about the number of parakeets that would comfortably fit in a 20x20x40x dome cage with everyday out of cage time. I currently have 2 in it, but would like to put another 2 in if that would be enough space.
What do you think?

I would not get more. As a matter of fact you need a wider cage for the two you have. JMO

Can you show us a picture of your cage?

Forgot where I read this, but the general rule is a MINIMUM of 1 square foot, per parakeet. You have a large enough cage to easily house 4 keets. Especially since it sounds like they only sleep inside at night. They don't typically move around when they sleep. Good luck. Let us know how it works out.

a Pic would be helpful but the minimum cage size for ONE budgie is 18x18x18 and I had a cage size of 26" L x 14" D x 22 ½" wire spacing. and it had 6 budgies in it, But like you mine got out more then they were in, they only ate, slept in the cage

Here is a picture of the cage I'm talking about. Again the dimensions are:
20w x 20d x 40h

That cage should provide plenty of space for 4 budgies. And since they are out of the cage most the time anyways, I doubt you'll have any issues. My cage is 25"L x 21"W x 30"H and I have 3 in it. They are also out of their cage most of the time, but they have plenty of room when they are in it.

Sorry I would say only 2 in that cage. They will all want to be up the highest and thats 4 budgies in a 20X20 space.

Just what I was thinking. Birds need width and depth not height.

Thank you for posting a pic of the cage. Personally I would not keep more than two Budgies in that cage.

Thanks everybody for your input. I think I will get a bigger cage then. Longer and wider rather than tall. ;)
Also, what do you all think about housing a Bourke Parakeet with the American Budgies?

It is usually not a good idea to house birds of different species together. In the case of a Bourke and Budgies I would worry for the Bourke because they are not aggressive, but Budgies can be aggressive and the Bourke could end up injured.
