:S :scared: Our budgie ... his name is "Budgie" ... recently strated having problems with his left leg and foot. He's 3 years old. He doesn't appear injured, just that he can't use it to strongly grab the perch or support his weight and he usually stands with his leg up and the foot hanging. There do not appear to be any injuires or disease ... and the bones look intact and straight. It's a pitiful sight! He is otherwise in good health and does not exhibit any other symptoms.

He uses his beak to pick at the toes as normal, and he can move the leg, but it almost appears he's had nerve damage or a stroke or something.

Has anyone else seen this? I'd read one thread were a person said thie bird had a similar condition and it turned out to be a tumor in the kidney that impacted the nerve to the leg.

We're at a loss to explain. Help!

its probably best to see an avian vet about it. not seeing any problems is not proof that there isnt any problems. he could have hurt himself on the bars or caught the leg on something else and dislocated it slightly or something without you knowing. if its not lifethreatening, you could probably get away with observing for a few more days, but if you can, a vet visit is the best choice you got. good luck.

I agree with Jay Jay, keep a watchful eye on him but to be on the safe side & to make sure hes not in pain i would strongly advise a visit to the vet ASAP. Keep us informed.

I agree! He may have pulled a muscle ect, don't touch it, you may hurt him more, go and see a vet and they may be able to help you.

We hope for the best!

If there are no symtoms to anything, consult your avian vet. I would give him a call to see if it may be something serious first. If it isn't anything serious and he tells you to just watch the bird then do so. But if he says to come I would go to the vet. Good luck and hopefully is nothing serious!

I concur...bring Budgie to an avian vet. If you need to find one in your area, you can try looking one up here:

http://www.aav.org/vet-lookup/

If he hasn't obviously injured his leg, then it is quite possible that something internal is going on, whether it be a nerve problem or a tumour that manifests itself as a leg problem. Please let us know how your sweety is doing! :p

There could be a tomour inside of him and it is putting pressure on the nerves that lead to his foot....can he move it or is it just dangling?

We've been keeping an eye on Budgie ... and he can move his leg somewhat, but his foot just droops. He is able to get around and has adapted to relying mostly on his right foot/leg. He seems in good spirits -- sings frequently -- and otherwise seems to be interacting normally with us -- not in any obvious pain that we can detect. His leg and foot are not showing any signs of swelling, bleeding, necrosis or anything untoward. That's a good sign. My wife Pam reminded me that he's 4 years old now ...

My 76 year-old mother recently injured her left foot and has been in a wheelchair and using a walker for the past six weeks. We've jokingly said we wonder if Budgie is exhibiting sympathy pains!

\;-}

We'll try to find an avian vet in the area to call ... I can't thank everyone enough. It is so wonderful to see that folks out there care as much for our little guy as we do.

I'll keep everyone updated. Budgie sends his best ... "tweet!"

Thanks for the update. I'm glad you are keeping a close eye on him. And yes, please do seek the advice of an avian vet. Good luck with the little guy! Our fingers are crossed for him that all is well!! ;)

We had a similar problem with our pigeon, where, one day she was standing with one leg up, and the foot hanging. Vet said that she probably caught her foot on something, and she had a bit of arthritus, which was aggravated when she caught her foot. Anyway, he landed up giving us a standing prescription for her, for the anti-inflamatory, metacam. We just used it when her arthritus flared up.

Budgie Update ... thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts and prayers for Budgie.

We went to the avian vet yesterday -- thanks Budgiekins for the link -- we found a local vet, Dr. Mary Campbell.

Fortunately, it does not appear to be serious. Mary says his leg isn't broken, and his hip and knee and in good shape, but his foot just hangs loose. She thinks he either bruised or tore his leg tendon and now his foot is paralyzed. She says it is possible that he'll regain function, but because it's been a couple of weeks now, it doesn;t look good for the long haul. She suggested a perch from a tree branch (which he has) because of the varying sizes of the branch, he won't get sores on the bottom of his good foot on which he now puts all the weight.

Budgie is in good spirits, and has become quite good at using his beak to grab his cage bars (and using his good foot) to move from the perch down to his water and food. We also take his food and water dishes up to his mouth so that if he's hungry, he can grab a quick drink and feed. He's also become good at flying directly into the door of his cage onto the lower perch so that he doesn't have to lift himself up into the doorway.

Again, thanks to everyone for your helpful suggestions and Budgie thanks you too! 'tweet.':D

:D Thanks, everyone. Just wanted to let you know. Our beloved "Budgie" died about 6 weeks ago. The avian vet said he'd either had a small stroke or nerve damage. He became increasingly weak, and one day he just died in my hands after looking at me and letting out two little tweets. I was very glad to be there when he went. We miss him every day. After a respectful funeral in which we wrapped him in a red cloth, placed him in a wooden cigar box and buried him underneat a large pine tree in our back yard ... we now have a new addition to the household -- his name is "Remy." He has a distictly different personality and is a wonderful companion. We will enjoy our first holiday with him this Christmas. We're also very glad our son, who is home on leave from the Army, has the opportunity to get to know him a few weeks before shipping overseas. Happy Holidays to all!

Oh! I am so sorry to hear about Budgie. I too had a budgie die recently (in fact, it was last Friday) and I miss her like crazy as I am sure you miss Budgie. They really do have an impact on our lives don't they? Considering how small they are, it is very amazing that we can get so attached to them.

I am happy to hear you got a new little fellow to add some joy to your house. Remy sounds like a wonderful addition. ;)

Isn't it cute how budgies have different personalities? I love that about them!
