Thanks!

http://www.birdtoyoutlet.com/bird-safety/safe-woods-for-birds.htm

heres a site with a list of safe trees

if you use trees from outside make sure to steralize them 1st unless your 100% sure they weren't sprayed with pestacides etc.

but I steralize them no matter what to be extra safe

Here are two links to sites that claim what is harmful to birds, or isn't. These links might help.

http://www.budgieplace.com/plants.html

The second site is fairly exhaustive. It is the one I use.

I have an apple tree in my yard and garden and right now it is dead and i chop down the branches and sterilize them. I sometimes leave on the bark because they like to strip it themselves. Here is the stripped branch/perch so far...:)

Interesting about the eucalyptus, becuase I have read that many Australian parrots feed on e. trees. Also, I have seen an online store selling e. and I read testimonials about how much their fids loved e. leaves and sticks.

MAPLE - WARNING

Maple tree is listed in most sites as a safe tree. Since we have the maple in our yard, I was offering my fids small branches with leaves last summer. They truly enjoyed it.

However, just recently I was told by several members who belong to an European parrot forum that maple is NOT safe. It often is affected by fungus that is v. harmful for the birds. :(

I asked them if this was based on research in Europe and they said, "No, research done in the US."

So no more maple for my fids unfortunately.

I talked to the budgie breeder at the store that I bought my birds at, and he says that he hangs big eucalyptus branches with the leaves in the budgies' cage so they can eat the leaves and use the branches as a perch. All of his budgies are perfectly healthy, so I would say that Eucalyptus is safe ;)

Budgies eat Eucalyptus in the wild and I know there are a few members who live in Austrailia who feed their Budgies Eucalyptus. What makes it unsafe for birds is if it has been sprayed. So you only want to feed your birds Eucalyptus that you know for sure has not been sprayed.

Science is often discordent with itself. One time butter is bad for you, the next it's good. Science changes its colours more often than some women their hair colours. Science is supposed to be a "science" but it's run by humans who are not perfect and so understandably the science they do may not be really so scientific. Too science changes because new information and truths are found that the geniuses in the past simply did not have even though they postulated on so little info. That's ok, it's ok to be patient with fellow human beings.

So then how do we find what is best for our budgies and not harm them by smple ignorance? Probably just being as gentle on ourselves as we are with our sweet creatures is a good start. It's ok we don't know ALL that might hurt our birds. Too our smarts ARE sufficient for these little ones. The kind of smarts that listen to gut feelings and if I feel in my gut that hemp is harmful, I'll not use it for my birds. Others will feel that it is safe, so they'll use it. And it's ok to disagree. Our intention IS to take care of these little darlings well, and really what better place is there to start than that? None of which I know.

So, don't worry about harming your bird. You're on this site, that means you can use the net and research as much as you can and like to find out everything you want to know about adorable budgies and their care. If you're like me self trust can be my worse downfall in taking care of my birds. It's amazing how a little education and information can remove that self doubt and replace it with confidence. You're here at least, you care enough to be educated more about your birds. So for those who worry, I think your birds are very lucky to have you, you care enough to find out what will harm them. And that's pretty dang noble of you!
