Well, I've had Milo for five weeks now and still no luck with getting him on my finger. He's still a baby, hasn't had his first molt yet, and I decided that maybe it would be easier for him to get on my finger while he was out of his cage. I've had other budgies before that wouldn't get on my finger while they were in their cage, but had no qualms about doing it while out.

So I took his cage into my bathroom and had the door closed and all that. I was doing some more training with him while he was in the cage, and he didn't seem like he was going to come out, even with his door wide open. Right before I was going to close the door and bring him back into the living room, he flew out... his wings are clipped, so he went right on the floor. He sat there for a minute, kind of surprised at his surroundings...

But then I couldn't get him back! He flew to the top of his cage, and I had some millet so I tried to lure him back inside, but he wasn't sure how to do it. Then he ended up back on the floor and was pretty scared. I decided to bring my cockatiel in to see if he would do as she did. He perked up and started calling to her when I brought the tiel in, and he followed her back to his cage. But he wouldn't go back in- he kept going on top of it. I kept trying to get him to step up onto my finger while he was on top of the cage, but he was putting his head down and running away. I came really close though... finally I had to grab him and put him back inside. He spent the rest of the afternoon preening and sleeping, and now he's playing with his toys. So...

I guess I will keep trying this out, as it seemed like he was thinking about getting on my finger... so eventually it will happen! Anyone else have any first time out of the cage experiences?

Well, when I got my first budgie, I could get him out, but he wasn't hand tamed, so he wouldn't get on my finger when I wanted to put him back in. In that case, I would get him on my head, and , for some reason, he would go into his cage from my head. He would always get on my head, because I would wear a hair clip with millet attached!;)

I like the millet hair clip. Very inventive.

Thanks. Fair warning though, after that the budgie would not stay out of my face, to the point of me having to "incarcerate" him:rolleyes: any timeI needed to get something done.

Well my budgie wont get on my finger from the cage to get out so i had to gently grab her [i know you arnt supposed to but, I couldnt get her out I tried leaving the door open for a while i tried getting her on my finger but when i threw her off balance only 1 foot went up and she held on tight with the other foot to her perch lol] but after I got her out she did some flying [wings arnt clipped] she flew from the cage into the bath tub [empty, plug plugged so she wouldnt get her foot stuck] I admit I freaked and went to get her out right away and then she flew up onto the sink .... she banged into things a couple times and scared the crap out of me ! and then when i got her on the floor I picked her up and left my hand open and she crawled onto my finger and perched there for 5-10 minutes on day 2 !!!! Gl getting your budgie on your finger :-) Im still working on the "step up" though she does not do it willingly i have to throw her off balance to do it.
