Hi. Great forum. Been reading many of the post for the past few days, so figured I'd actually join it. Have had my new budgie JayJay for 3 days now. Got him at the local petco. I picked him mainly because he was the youngest looking (based on stripes on his forhead) and one of the most active. He's still slightly afraid of me, but seems to be getting a bit more comfortable with my hand; doesn't go bonkers everytime I do anything in the cage.
Seems to be enjoying the cage setup so far with all the natural branch perches I cut and fitted in. Made him a braided raffia rope swing and a ladder. He seemed rather excited as I was making the swing. Probably one of the first times he actually climbed over to get closer to me in the cage. He stays close to the swing a lot now that I have put it in, but I have yet to see him on the ladder much, but then I havent seen him anywhere near the base of the cage since I first put him in. If he does end up getting scared and has to drop down, he races to climb back up to the higher perches pretty fast.
He's been eating nothing but millet, but I'll let it slide as its his first few days with me. Once he finishes what's left, I'll be getting him onto other foods like the seeds. Starting to place some millet with the seed to entice him a bit. He got his first taste of mint and parsley earlier today too. I tied a small bunch of raffia that I cleaned and hung it in his cage when I noticed how excited he got by it. then I took some mint and parsley and put it tied with the raffia. It didn't take long for him to go from raffia to actually nibbling on the greens. THough he didn't eat much, its a good sign.
Hoping he will start to eat from my hand by the end of today or tomorrow, but it'll happen when it does. If I'm lucky, maybe hand tamed by the end of this week. Haha, probably won't be that quick but one can always hope.
Anyway, I'll see you all around.
edit:
he ate from my hands after this post hahah. now if only he'll step on my hand...
