View Full Version : Chirps, Tweets and Squarks!
Is there any way to understand all the noise budgies make?
Can you tell the difference between warning, mating, friendly or angry calls?
Can people understand budgie noises: Yes or No?

I think you can tell a lot about their noises based on the context and their behaviour. For example, when 4:00 rolls around, my budgies know that it is their out-of-cage playtime so they start chirping pretty loudly (just short bursting chirps) and will scurry back and forth on their front cage perches and sometimes jump to the front of the cage and then back down, and then back up, back down, . . . .
When you look at your budgie in combination with listening to the noises he or she makes, you can figure out fairly easily what their intentions are. Content budgies seem to chatter quietly to themselves, excited budgies sing quite loudly for example. Many of the noises they make are imitations of the sounds around them, which is quite interesting; telephones ringing, doorbells, microwave beeps, music from the radio. . . .
For some reason, Kiwi always squawks non-stop when I am filling up the yellow bath tub with water, yet, he will still get in it (even though he sounds quite irritated by it). I haven't figured that one out!!
Also, I should add that many budgies learn to recognize their budgie buddy's chirps and aren't satisfied until THAT one budgie replies to their call. Overall, they are very intelligent little creatures. And who ever really thought it was an insult to be called a "bird brain". It's actually quite the compliment!
There is one noise I know what they're saying. I read about it in a book. It's hard to explain, but it's basically a series of really quick chirps. It means "cut it out". So if another budgie is pecking at their wing, they night make this noise. Budgie used to make this noise whenever we'd stick out fingers in between the bars of the cage.
Is it a kind of squark or just normal quick chirps?
I love it when they do those excited long slow LOUD(!) chirps.
Dusty and Misty used to do that to Bobby upstairs and a house sparrow outside that I nicknamed Chirpy!
Thank you all for sharing your knowledge in this unusual thread!

So yea... THANKS :D :D
Today Lily did the 'angry dolphin' noise when she was in the sink, covered over with a towel. (To catch her!) She makes the most crazy sounds! So does Billy!

Bobby has been making the angry dolphin noise when she is trying to find where blue is. its really cute that it agravates her so much. but she does the dolphin noise, then it goes into a really pretty song. Its a mixture of noises. Its really sweet.
And, i think bobby has started to figure out a little on how to talk. You can hear her try to say words. I cant wait for her to actually speak :)
Oooh I hope he does start soon!

I certainly know the call of "leave me alone I am very comfortable thank you." My budgies give a rapid Ya Ya Ya Ya Ya Ya and a quick nip if applicable.
