Hello!

This is my first thread here and it looks nice. A lot of people seem to go here!

So I have a question about my female who will lay soon I think. I have to say that she had a baby in the past (there is more than 3 years now). I never put her nest box back since that time. Note that she had no problems.

Now her vent is big and that since july 5 or 6. Certainly it got bigger since that date.

She go in and out of the nest box quickly now. It starts yesterday. I think this is because I put on wood chip which I spray with water to keep moisture inside. Someone tell me to do so. It will help her to lay down. Now she trying to bring out the wood out of the nest box.

I placed a "fake egg" inside. This is supposed to help a female to lay.

There is some pictures of her:
(on the 2nd she enter the nest and you can see her vent)

Hi. Welcome. Based on the photo that is attached, I would suspect the hen is not in season since her cere is not a beige or dark brown color. Maybe you need to wait a while until she seems to be more in "condition."

ETAHoffman,

My hen's vent is big. How can we explain that? She seem in very good condition since she move on the perch, eat (but basically it's the male that feed the female), sing, etc.

Her cere is never very dark but like you said now its cere do not annonce the "season".

The problem is that I put on the nest box because she was "big". My couple mate sometime. Again it starts july 5.

Any suggestion on the situation anyone?

Hmmmm...the swollen vent problem....is it just the opening in that area that is swollen, or does it look like the whole region (her lower abdomen) is swollen. If it is the vent opening that is swollen, it is possible that your little budgie is just feeling frisky (like she wants to mate). If her lower abdomen is swollen, that would concern me. From the picture you took of her vent, it looks like the whole region is swollen. It concerns me that you said she has been this way since the beginning of July....I would consider bringing her to an avian vet for an exam just to be sure.

If you need to find a vet in your area, you can look one up here:

Here are some other questions for you: Is she active or does she seem tired? Does she eat well? What do her droppings look like?

By the way, bienvenue! C'est une plaisir de te rencontrer. Moi, j'habite a Ottawa, Ontario. Dans quelle region de Quebec habite-tu? (Pardon my french; it is far from perfect!!!)
