View Full Version : We're getting a new baby!!
A pigeon!! Our vet called us because we had recently lost our precious Ruby(Female pigeon), and he knew that she, and also Squabbles (our male pigeon), had both been rescues. The Docs' receptionist had found a baby pigeon on the ground. She tried to put it back in the nest, but Mom pushed it right back out, so they're hand feeding it,and the Doc tested it for everything-- It had a slight bacterial infection in the belly (fairly common in wild birds), but otherwise tested negative, and he treated the infection, now he's waiting for the retest results, and he asked us if we want to adopt it. As long as the retest is good, we can pick it up on Thursday!! Yea!!! Yahoo!! :baby:

That's awesome! Pigeons sure can be interesting to watch! Good luck with getting him/her!;)
Ewww..your keeping pigeons inside your house!
Absotively!! Posolutely!!:D We use the largest sized dog kennel as a cage, and (I'll bet you didn't know this) female pigeons can be potty trained once they lay their first eggs! For the male I use the avian suit when he's out of his cage. So you see, it's really not so "ewww"(ey), at all.:twothumbs:

How cute, a baby pigeon!! Good luck with it! :)
Thanks! We're picking it up tomorrow!!!! We're going to put a divider in Squabbles' cage. He won't like it much, but we'll see how it goes. Ohh, I can't wait!!! :laughing1: :jumping:
goodluck I never heard of someone keeping a pigeon inside they are supposed to be dirty and carry diseases I seen on tv they have lice and thier droppings can carry 19 diseases or something like that!:S
They can carry disease, and they can have lice. Just as people can carry disease and can have lice. Most of us don't though, do we? Because we practice good hygeine and keep our living environment as clean as possible. Well it's the same with my pigeon. When I first got him (each of them, actually), I had him tested for the basics, quarantined him for 45 days, and now, there's no more threat of him getting a disease, or lice, than there is for me getting those things. I go out of the house far more often than I take him out. If anyone gives anyone a disease, it would probably be me, giving it to him!;) I'm not offended by your reaction, but if you think about it, really there's no reason why he would be any dirtier than your bird. He loves to bathe, and goes into the shower with me quite frequently! :p
You take a shower with him?:S
Yes, Joey. It's great fun. Do you never bring your budgie in the shower? I take turns bringing my birds into the shower. Sometimes I bring morethan one bird, if they get along. I find it to be great play time and talking time (quaker parrot.):happy4:
Really!Do you think I could shower with my cockatiel!
Pigeons are great. I have two pair.
One pair of Crested Frill Backs. These two here. The male is the white and the female is the black.

I've done a few searches on the web for them and found nothing. A few breeders but asking prices that were way to much. I was lucky to come across those two from a many who have been selling pigeons in my city for over 30 years. He is planning to move so you was selling out his stock. And I saw these two and had to have them...
My gosh, what a find! You are so lucky!!
Well, I went to pick up the baby pigeon:D , and I didn't get to bring it home:( ! The retest for the stomach bacteria shows that baby's not all cleared up yet. They told me probably because it was so stressful, being pushed out of the nest and rejected by mom and all. I have to wait while they treat him/her again. Well, at least I saw the darling!:whatever: She also showed me an all white, homing pigeon, that had gotten turned in that very day. Someone found it. She said it was probably released in a wedding ceremony, and didn't find its' way home.:( I wanted it.:o I didn't ask what she would do with it, because I thought she would probably want to keep it, if no owner is found. Joey, just in case you're reading this, did you know that, at some wedding ceremonies, when people think they release beautiful white doves, it's really white homing pigeons? And you know how you said street pigeons are ugly? Well. if you take the time to stop and look at them, really look at them, with an open mind, you'll see that they can be quite beautiful. It's really more the idea that we have in our minds that makes people think they are ugly. Before I had a pigeon, I thought they were ugly too. Now I see themwith different eyes... Oh, and to answer your question-- yes, ofcourse you can bring your cockatiel into the shower. You just introduce them to it gradually so as to lower the stress and make it a pleasant experience for them. My birds, first I'll put their cage in the bathroom with the shower on a couple times, then I'll put them on a perch in the bathroom near the shower. I have a perch inside the shower, and eventually I'll put them on that, but i won't get them wet. I onlygetthemwet, when they are comfortable and show interest in getting wet. At that point I hold them on one hand and cup the other hand under the water and bring them gradually closer to the water. Some birds will start by getting their head wet and learn, over time, to totally enjoy it and shower on my shoulder all the time. Other birds never relax all the way, and don't want to stay in very long. It depends on the bird and the patience of the owner. Ialways respect what the birdwants, and never force the issue. Okay, wishmeluck on gettingmynew baby nextweek!:)
I never got that baby because his health issues were too much and the vet tech decided to keep him herself to see if she could get him well. We did get a baby pigeon though. The vet tech gave us a young er one-- also a rescue. It was barely old enough to eat on its' own when we got it, and it still tries to jam its' beak down my throat to feed. I can't let it obviously, but it tries. And it likes to snuggle into my hair for comfort. It's a hybrid-- half street, and half some other kind. The vet tech isn't sure what. It's so adorable! I'm temporarily calling it "Quibbles" (our other pigeon is "Squabbles"}. I can't think of a name, and I don't know what sex it is. I love it sooo much though...
