It was late in the evening and my Father was home alone, so he thought he would have a nice quiet bath. My Dad would put liquid dish soap in his bath water, he said so the tub wouldn’t have a ring around it! Yeah right, I think he just like the bubbles.

Dad had turn all the lights out in the house except for the one in the bathroom and as my Father lay soaking in the tub he both heard and felt “plop”. Dad sat upright with the mad chattering of my budgie Peter. Thank goodness my Dad was able to rescue Peter from the hot bath water and all the bubbles. Peter was rinse off under the clean tap water and put on the bathroom floor to dry off. Peter was one very mad budgie; my Father wasn’t too happy either.

Several weeks later my Father did the same thing again. Only this time as Peter made his way to the bathroom he saw the bathtub it was like he stop flying in mid beat of the wing. Guess where he landed this time….in the toilet bowl !! Now my Dad had to get out of the tub and retrieved Peter. Once again Peter was rinse off under clear tap and put on the bathroom floor to dry off.

After the second time around my Father never left the bathroom door open when he was home alone. Now I know what you are thinking, why didn’t anyone just shut Peter in his cage. Well I take no blame for that, as I was just a child. However my parents’ just change the way things were done for the pets in our home. Peter was never again left in the dark without the last person who was going to bed telling Peter it was time for him to go in his cage. “Good night Peter” and then the lights were turn off.

Too many years! Peter was my very first budgie when I was a child. I got Peter as a gift for passing grade two...I was seven years old. Yes Peter was very out going budgie and full of mischief. Peter also talk human. I will share other stories about him. He lived to be ten and half years old, and I never forgot him. Thank you for your kind words about my story!

Peter Home Alone

Our family was out for the night. When we came home the first thing we always did was to check in with Peter. Most times he would be on top of his cage, or at the very least one of his favorite spots! You would normally get a chirp from Peter saying it is about time you guys got home. Looked for him on the lamp in the living room….nope no Peter. Chandelier in the dinning room …nope no Peter.

Now we were all getting worried!! So it became an all out very organized search. The FBI would have been proud of us. Room by room we combed through the house, six large rooms. Seem like they were very large when you are looking for a puff of feathers.

An hour later and still no Peter! We were all sitting at the kitchen trying to regroup and think of what to do next. Out of the corner of my eye I could see a white face cobalt blue budgie peeking at me. Okay Peter you’re caught come on out. Out he comes from his hiding place and I’m sure he was laughing at us in budgie language.

Peter had hid in the step part of a step on garbage can. We were all just glad that no one had to toss out anything in the trash while Peter was hiding in there. Peter never did this again and I am sure he just did it the one time to watch us make fools of ourselves.

Hi Dotty,
When I first got my Nana, I was trying to hand tame her, and she flew off somewhere in the house and I finally found her behind the washing machine. She wouldn't get on my hand, so I had to tie a few budgie sized ladders together, and leave the room, before she would climb out of there. That scared me, but, live and learn, huh?:p

What a great idea putting budgie ladders together. I'm glad for you that Nana used the ladders to get out and you didn't have to move the washing machine. I think some budgies are just more adventurous then others. Does Nana like to explore the house?

Into your fish tank?! Wow, on purpose? Nana is not all that adventurous, it's just that she hadn't bonded with me all that well at the time and she decided she'd had enough of the hand taming for the moment, and she just wanted to get away.
