I've been looking through here for ideas to make my 'keets some toys for Christmas and because Riley's cage looks quite empty and I've seen a few people using twine. To get to the point here, I have a horse and up at the barn where she's boarded they have LOTS of twine from the hay that they just throw away. If I can find some way to sanatize it, is it okay for them? It's kind of scraggily and they might be able to pull bits off but on one of the pictures I saw on here, it looked like exactly the same thing.

I don't know what it is, I'll bring some home and take some pictures of it. It's at the barn so would it need sanatized?

I'm about 99% sure it's not since it's used around animals as it is. Like I said, I'll bring some home next time I'm up there, I think I'm going tomorrow.

sweet... yeah the twine that i used to use (used to live on a thoroughbred stud) was plastic... it was just the twine the companies used to tie their hay bales/biscuits up, it was fine for use with the horses and stuff, but i would definitely not recommend using it around birds...

Ahh I see. Where I keep my horse, they grow their own hay so they don't have to go through anyone to get it.

nice!
we couldnt do that unfortunately, we always had a large part planted with Lucerne and barley etc, with breeding horses they ate more than we could grow :p

yeah i have heard that the reason sisal twine is so good is because it is designed to fray easily if your bird gets stuck in it somehow... i have read some nasty stories of birds chewing their own toes and feet off to get out of being stuck in a rope toy...

I was going to ask the same question...is hay bale twine ok to use for bird toys...I have horses so I have tons of hay bales which means tons of twine!!!
