Hi all!

Since this sub forum is for sharing, I thought that I'd share how my parents came to own their two current budgies. Both were rescued by us in their backyard! Kiwi, a green budgie, was first seen eating out of the wild bird feeder eight years ago this September. We had two other budgies at the time(Patches and Sprite, R.I.P.)and so I took their cage outside and placed it right by the feeder. Sure enough, Kiwi flew down to the cage to investigate, and I took the cage with Kiwi on top of it inside. We bought another cage, and she remains with my parents today! She is extremely smart- she figured out how to get the cage door to stay open in no time, and she chewed her way through the bottom of the play gym floor. The blue budgie, Gonzo, was lucky enough to fly into my parents' yard one rainy morning while my mom was on the phone. She just happened to look outside and saw a little blue bird underneath the tree. She yelled for me, and, in my bathrobe, went outside to see if I could catch him. He was missing his long tailfeathers, and was soaking wet. I was able to grab him, and brought him inside. That was three years ago... lucky birdies! :)

What a charming story!!! I wish I could get that lucky! But where I live if they were wild more than about 4 months they would freeze. It gets 40 below zero here in the winter! Spring and fall get below freezing on a regular basis. Summer is the only time they'd survive, but it only lasts about 4 months. Lucky budgies, indeed!

Well, I'm pretty sure that they were once someone's pets, but just escaped. Kiwi was a mature adult when we found her, so I have no idea how old she actually is. But we've had her for eight years now... and Gonzo was a baby when he was found- he hadn't molted yet. The strange thing is that he's always tugging on Kiwi's tail feathers and messing them up. It's like he remembers that someone tugged his out! He's kind of a bully, but Kiwi doesn't put up with it very long. Neither of them is the alpha bird- they're equals! Kiwi will get on your finger if she feels like it, but we've never been able to get Gonzo to, unless there's a potato chip in your hand. But they sure are fun...

Lucky birdies, lucky peoples!!:budgie: :p Laci, did you read my story about my first budgie? It can't be the same Kiwi, of course, because it has only been about three and a half years since we lost our precious Kiwi, but your story gives me hope that my baby is alive and happy somewhere.

That's sad how you lost your baby... my parents have lost budgies the same way. Forgot they were on their shoulders, etc. I've always tried to be super careful with my fids, but accidents can easily happen.
