We just got our first budgie two days ago. When we woke up, she was fine, but not even an hour later there is green stuff on the sharp part of her beak, her feet, and around her vent. This happened almost instantaneously. She has a small green rope toy in her tank that is roughly the same color as the mysterious stuff on her and at first we assumed she had played with the rope and transferred some fuzzies or green dye onto her claws and beak. We also thought maybe she got this stuff around her vent by scratching. But I just don't know! I've looked all through these posts and couldn't find anything that sounds like this. Someone please help!! I have no avian vet nearby, but if there is something I can do to help in the event it's some kind of infection, I would like to get on it ASAP. I'm sooooo worried!! She isn't acting unusual; she's her same friendly self, and gets very energetic while I'm checking her out. Her poop looks fine and is definetly NOT that same green color--it's more tan. I pray it's just some color off her rope. I appreciate your guys' opinions. Thanks!

Hmmmm, it's a mystery so far isn't it? Well, it sounds like it could be from her green rope toy. The only green you'll really ever find from a budgie is in their poops which range in colour from greenish to brownish. Are her feathers just discoloured? Or is there actually some chunkier material on her?

I wouldn't worry about her yet, especially if she is acting like her usual self (from what you have seen in the short time you have had her anyway) but have you tried looking up an avian vet at the site below in case you need one in the future?

Thank you so much! I am positive now it is fecal matter. We've cleaned her up but I witnessed the pooping, and it's definetly just a funky shade of green but otherwise looks healthy according to things I've read on this board. I appreciate your help! I was SO worried!

try taking the rope toy away, if the green stuff goes away then its probably from the toy. if not, then i'm no help here.

take the green rope toy out and wet it and see if any dye come off the rope if it does throw the rope away as it could be dangerous to your bird and they are very good at hiding their illness.
If it was mine I would get rid of it anyway and replace it with some natural perches

I did ALL of those things. And it was NOT the toy. Sadly, she stepped in some very green poop and scratched her face causing it to get all over her beak. She did all of this in seconds. I had to wet her done and wipe her off. It was so sad. She hated every bit of it. But she is clean and fine. Her vent is dyed green because of this and I couldn't get it clean enough like I would have liked. It seems to be sticking a small bit to her little white feathers around that area. But, her little droppings are normal, not runny. Is she okay?? Do they tend to get a little dirty in that area, or is that completely bad? She has continued to act just fine, eating and drinking(I'm sure) as normal. Plus, she has been singing all day. I really don't want my new baby to be sick. My heart just couldn't take it if something happened to her.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Budgies, especially young ones, will often step in poop and sometimes even try to eat it. They are also more susceptible to getting poops stuck to their bums for some strange reason. Since your little sweety is so new, just keep an eye on her and see how she is adapting to her new environment. :p
