I just had a successful mating of 2 birds one looks like your female (yellow/green) and one looks pastel colored. I had 3 babies and each one looks totally different from each other. All the reading on genetics and it didn't even happen that way. 1 baby is blue/grey/white; 1 yellow/bright green/white; one white/beige/blue with a couple dark spots.

Who knows Aly! LOL... not knowing their family tree, what genes are hiding, i have NO clue LOL... I'm sure Kerry or Kate will have better info (me & genetics... oil & water LOL)

Green is a dominant color.
Dark eyed clear is a recessive color.
Opaline is a sex linked mutation. (hen on the bottom) Males can be split for it, but hens show it if they got it. ;)

Assuming your greens are not split for blue you will get green pied that will be split for blue.

If your greens ARE split then you will get some blue pieds as well as some greens that are split for blue.

Took me all this time to try and get a pic. This is just to show you that genetics aren't always right (I guess)https://publish.comcast.net/rpath/X1WlV8cA4OaYTg_alseUFBwJkH-ZeJKbCFX8YNTZhIz-FBZYffY1emGb7XFowKdqM26vqNXKB6d4v_t5IctpDo0Rnf3Hon YVj0b_QG5Ld4A/
These are the 3 babies from the birds above.

Thanks :) I am actually trying again with a different pair. I let these two decide and now I am being the matchmaker. It is so exciting to see it actually happen.

not that far off I might say....

the green could be split for blue and thus the blue kid.... also they must have had a yellowface parent and therefore the yellow/reccesive on the bottom.... and the white reccesive is also a blue one just pied

and seeing the blue dad is clearflight split to pied or just split to reccesive, them mom woulf also have to be split to reccesive to produce the yellow and white babies..... then mom is opaline so all males are split to opaline too...

wow talk about confusing LOL

LOL..... I get sooo confused too.... budgie genetics:rolleyes:

a bit clearer is that you need both parent to be or be split to blu in order to produce reccesive pieds and blues..... so that means the green parens is split for both and the blue one is both......as he´s visual....

also as opaline is sex linked that means females are gonna be opaline if out of an opaline dad.

if mom is opaline (in your case) then males will be split to it and will be able to produce opaline females when bred to other hen, and if that hen is also opaline then males out of them could also be opaline...

Don''t worry guys I have seen show breeders of 20 years experience who get totally lost with bird genetics. Quite a few of them go to sleep when there is a lecture on genetics at their club.

A couple of easy things to remember. Only a male can be split for a sex linked colour. And both parents need to be split to recessive pied to produce recessive pied youngsters.

If a male is split to a sex linked colour any visual of that colour will automatically be females as it passes from father to daughter. eg. Opaline, Cinnamonwing, Ino.

When breeding with dominant pied, pair a pied to a normal and 50% of the youngsters will be dominant pied over the breeding life of the parents. I was lucky with one of mine they threw 5 pieds in their first nest.

That's the problem with most things written about genetics, it's written in Vet Speak which makes it very hard for the average person to understand.

The Australian Birdkeeper Magazine has a range of books for birds. One very good one is A Guide to.... Colour Mutations and Genetics in Parrots by Dr. Terry Martin BVSc (an avian vet and genetics specialist). These books are available via mail order so you should be able to get them over there. It goes through all the colours and also gives you sample breedings and what you can expect to get from them. The link is.

Don't know what the price conversion would be but you can email them to find out.

A friend from England on another forum sent me a genetics book a few weeks back, I've yet to sit down and dive into it! Between traveling with the horses, dealing with wintering the birds, and Kates mounds of homework! I need a 25th hour each day... but heck, i'd probably sleep thru it!
