: Male "attacking" female budgie!

I am new to this forum! Joint as I need a bit of advice!

I have two budgies (Bobby & Thierry). I've had Bobby for about 2 years (when I got her I thought "she" was a "he" hence the name Bobby!). I got Thierry about 4-5 months after as Bobby seemed a bit depressed and lonely. So I have one male and one female budgie.

They have been happily living together up until about a month ago. Now it seems that Thierry is "attacking" Bobby. He follows her all around the cage, constantly pecking her. Even when she goes to eat, he jumps from his feeding bowl onto her and pushes her away. The other day he knocked her to the bottom of the cage and pinned her down while she made this funny squeeling sound. Bobby is a pretty quiet budgie whereas Thierry is noisy and chrips and screeches almost the whole day (much to the annoyance of my family.....!).

I was a bit concerned so I put Thierry in a seperate cage yesterday. Bobby doesn't seem to be too bothered (if anything she looks relieved!) whilst Thierry seems a bit miffed not to have Bobby to knock around!

Am I over-reacting? I have read that females are more bossy and dominent than males but not the other way around like in this instance! I don't know where to go from here really so wondered if anyone had some advice? Shall I attempt to put them back in the same cage together?

I can't bear the thought of Bobby getting beaten up (I have a bit of a soft spot for her!).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It could be:

a) Your cock is wanting to breed and your hen is not on the same cycle.

b) You have an overly aggressive cock that should be housed on his own or give a highly aggressive hen to put him in his place.

Either way I would seperate these two before one comes out bloody.

I though it might be something to do with breeding as Thierry was trying to jump on the back of Bobby!! Frisky little devil!!

They're in seperate cages at the moment, what shall I do then? Keep them that way or leave it for a few days then put Thierry back in with Bobby and see how they get on again? I just don't want anything to happen to Bobby! She's the more friendly one who will gladly hop on your finger for a few minutes whereas Thierry won't come anywhere near me!!

Well breeding season isn't "just a couple of days," you've just hit the very start of it - it run though the spring. Is there a reason you can not keep them living in seperate cages? Enjoy the frendly one and keep playing with her?

There's no problem in keeping them in seperate cages really, although it's one extra cage to keep clean - but that's irrelevant really, just want both budgies to be happy and safe!!

Hopefully they'll be ok though. Bobby is pretty tame just need to work on Thierry - I can't even get my hand near him without him jumping away from me! Might be easier to tame him if he's on his own for a bit.......!

Thanks for your advice!

Well if it makes you feel any better. I have 27 cages to service now that breeding season is under way and 6 flight pens. Want to swap choirs??? ;)
