Yes he's a Pied. :) His tail is Indigo on top & white feathers under. There's a yellow spot on the back of his head, like a monks bald spot. There's yellow at the base of his tail & on his wings, just before they turn white.
I really wanted a Yellow face. The Pied is a bonus. His chest is Cobalt I guess - there seem to be a lot of different blues there.
Glad you like him :D He's pretty big too but I think he's an American Budgie.

Here's a really good site that talks about the variations of Budgie colours:
http://www.budgerigars.co.uk/beginners/colour.html
I hadn't thought about the name of his colouring. I never thought I'd get the exact colour that was my favourite - I'm very giddy at the moment. :o
It seems he's a Skyblue, Dominant Pied, Yellow Face!
At least I think so. He even has the yellow spot on the back of his head, for the Dominant Pied.

I don't know, he looks a little dark to be a sky blue, I think you were right when you said he was a cobalt.
anyway, he's absolutely beautiful. imagine being able to find him at the shelter!! Have fun taking care of him :)

When I look at your (Amber) bird & Joey's they look more Sky blue?
Laker has so many blues on his chest I am uncertain. Up near his neck it is darker - almost purple, then it cascades into a cobalt like blue with a dark cyan blue right at the tail.
In the light & with this camera his blue looks darker than it is. His yellow is darker than in the photo too. It’s a cute photo, but 'no cigar' on accuracy.

Yes my budgie is an Opaline Sky Blue Male I would say that your budgie is a Dutch Pied Mauve Yellowface

I have to admit that I've never heard of a Dutch Pied, when talking about Budgies. The Mauve idea is cool - I am a little scetchy about the blues to be honest. It's a bit of a head scratcher - but in reviewing it I do think he is not light enough to be a sky-blue. :) Definately Cobalt or Mauve ( but I thought Mauve was greyer??).
I just found out the type - I think!
~ a Clearflight Pied - dominant, is what he is - since he lacks the 'clear' tummy band, but has clear flights! & He's a Yellow face 1 with a Sky Blue body. - I think the photo must have distorted the real colours.
I found this link on Colour mutations in one of the other threads: http://www.budgieplace.com/colors.html
