Hello all! My name is Lindsey and I'm the very proud new mom of a two-week old budgie named Martini. We seem to be adjusting to each other well, but I'm concerned because Martini has not made one peep since I brought him home. Everything I've ever heard or read about budgies points to their talkative nature, but my poor bird won't even chirp! Should I be concerned?:S

2 weeks old!! That's way to young to be away from its Mum. I have never experienced baby budgies, but I'm not sure that that young budgies can actually chirp! 6-8 weeks is when they are supposed to be separated

Thanks for the post; maybe I misunderstood the person I got him from, but she said he was born between the 16th and the 20th of June.

 agree with Percy n Millie 2 weeks is far to young to be taken away from its parents, they would still be feeding it then teaching it to shell seeds ! Please get back in touch with the person you got the budgie from, Is the bird eating ?? you may have to handfeed it. Between 6/8 weeks is uaually when a baby leaves its parents.
Hey Lindsey! Welcome to the site :) .

Welcome Lindsey!! I agree with every one else. 2 weeks is waytoo young to be separated from the parents. Is he eating??? If not there are commercial baby foods available for budgies. You feed them with a dropper or pipette.

He does seem to be eating seeds alright, though he has little to no interest in millet or any of the other fruits or veggies I've offered him. I got him from a bird shop in town; it's been around forever so I can't imagine that they would sell birds that were too young. Has anyone ever heard of a mute bird?

Don't worry about your budgie, if it's eating and drinking then it's living! Besides, birds have been raised when they have been seperated from their mother at a very young age, although you should definately inform the pet shop about this, as it is dangerous to the other budgies. Good Luck!

I wouldn't worry about your "mute" budgie. That can be quite normal, especially with adjusting to a new environment and also if your budgie is a female (since they tend not to sing or chirp as much as males). My budgie Skyla had not made one peep when I got her....I don't think I heard anything from her for a few weeks! Then I decided to play the sound of a bird chirping on the internet for her, and she chirped right back at it! You could consider doing the same (but just don't overdo it as it may begin to stress out your budgie if he/she can't find the other bird who is chirping)....;)
