I had just posted a thread (under Breeding) about my male, Gibson. He was acting a bit different; he spent most of his time lying in the nest box with Mishka. I guess I should know by now that when I feel something isn't quite right with my birds, usually it means just that.

I went over to check on him this afternoon... Mishka came right out and over to me, which surprised me, and then I heard movement in the box and out Gibson fell. He couldn't make it to a perch, and wasn't even able to tuck his wings in. I removed him immediately; I wrapped him in a soft towel and held him, scratching his head softly... he died shortly after.

I know I'm not the first to have this happen, and I've had other budgies pass on, but this was just so sudden. I'm devasted, my daughters are sad, and his mate Mishka is still looking for him even though I know she knows what happened. I'm terrified that he had something that he passed on to her, and that she's next. And even so, she may still just die of a broken heart.

Sorry to ramble on and on, I'm trying to cope. Thanks for listening...

I am so sorry to hear of your sweet little Gibson's passing. I can relate to the shock and sense of emptiness one feels when losing a budgie. Please know that my thoughts are with you during this difficult time and that my fingers are crossed that your sweety Mishka does not get ill.

Take care of yourself and your daughters. May you have fond memories of Gibson that will last you a lifetime. Sweet dreams little guy.

..he wasn't very old either. So many of our birds die way too young.
I understand how you feel, I just lost a budgie a week ago. Her partner is making the favourite perch available every night - just in case. I am also concerned about the survivor's broken heart. I did get another stray form the humane society.
But of course, we have to keep the quarantine. It is really tough:(

Do you have pictures and videos? I find that helps...
I feel your pain.....

I'm so sorry about Gibson. Birds are fragile little things, even though they like to be tough cookies! :)
Gibson is lucky he had such a nice person like you to look after him and give him lots of love. Mishka is also lucky that she has you to look after her when she is upset.
I feel your pain also, in time it will pass.

I'm so sorry about your loss of Gibson. I just lost a Budgie that I only had a few short days and she died in my hands, also. Isn't it a terrible feeling when you know there is nothing you can do? My Budgie's death was also very sudden and unexpected.

Hang in there and I hope the days ahead are better for you. Hopefully your other Budgies will be okay. Please keep us posted.

RIP sweet little Gibson. :(

I'm terribly sorry to hear about your loss of that perky boy, may your eggs hatch healthily and bring you his son who will be just as great as he is.

I am so very sorry for your loss. No matter how many animals I have lost over the years, the pain doesn't ease.

Thinking of you.

RIP dear Gibson, fly free.

Have you taken the other bird to the vet just in case something has passed on to her?

Yes, i've spoken with a vet and Mishka is currently on a broad spectrum antibiotic, just to be safe. And of course, she's very sad, she calls for him sometimes, so that doesn't help her health any. Our Gibson health deteriorated very quickly, and because he was in the box with her so much, I guess I didn't notice it as soon as I should, so the guilt I feel is terrible... but thank you so much to all of you for your sympathy and well-wishes, it's really appreciated. ~ Lisa

just an update... Mishka was on an antibiotic, which seemed to work, but she had a relapse about a week ago; when I got up on the morning of 12/2, I found her on the bottom of her cage, she had passed away in the middle of the night sometime. I believe she was truly heartbroken, because even though her health improved, her behavior (attitude?) seemed to get worse, probably because she couldn't see or hear Gibson any longer. They are now both buried together out back under a beautiful tree in our yard, and we have to console ourselves by thinking that at least they're together again now, somewhere in "birdie heaven". And it's a blessing that I their youngest son, Gershwin, here with us too... we only have to look at him, or hear him "talk" and sing, to remember his mom and dad. And thanks for all the wishes, it's really appreciated... Lisa

That is so sad - to lose 2 birds in such a short time. I feel very badly for you. Take care.

Did the vet tell you what it might have been?

I'm so sorry about your two beautiful birds:( I'm glad that you have their son to consule your sadness and I know you'll be able to get through this.
