OK hi welcome to my breeding jornoul. i previously made one but it ended unseccessfully becuase of swapping pairs.I have a pair that have some exciting news but i must go to the start ok well here we go:
Cock:
Name: Ozzie
Colour:Dilute oplaline grey
Age:unknown but min. 1 half year
Picture:http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd279/Squeak_Crumble/100_0292-1.jpg
Hen:
Name:Macadamia
Colour: I dont know budgie term but shes black white and blue if any one knows plz tell me
Age:unknown but max.3 yrs min. 2yrs
Picture:http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd279/Squeak_Crumble/100_0298.jpg
ok well heres some more info:i have a avairy about a metere square two meteres high with peeked roof.I have3 hens, and 4 cocks.i feed them natraul grains and grasses and they have various cuttlebone mineral.etc.they have lots of toys and 3 nesting boxes if you want more heres a pict:http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd279/Squeak_Crumble/100_0317.jpg
soz its old and weve taken all nesting boxes down and built a shelf and added extra nestbox
ok this happend about a little less than a week ago:
I caught them red handed!!!!!!!!! We were outside eating lunch and i looked over and ozzie was mating with macadamia !!!!!!!! he fell of so he tried again and fell of again and then she went in nesting box and he stood gaurd. this afternoon i saw them again at it!!!! there feeding each other a heap!!! and they are always in the nest box and i am sooooooooo happy this is my first time i saw a budgie mating apart from in pictures.what amazed me is they did it on a perch in the middle of the day.most people say they do it in the nest box or at night but in the middle of the day not even at the back of the cage but at the front i meen its amazing like they want to show off!!!!!
might expect eggs soon fingers crossed!!!
ok heres some picts:
ok update: ozzie has been tring to mate all morning but macadamia isnt let me say a morning bird!!! heres some picts:

Don't worry to much I have had hens lay on yhe 3rd day.
Pippi
10-13-2007, 06:03 AM
I would say that she is laying in the late evening or middle of the night.. Dont be to concern about the way that she leaves the box, she probably only knocks them about when she is disturbed and tries to get away in a huge hurry. Try knocking on the nest box lighlt first so that she knows that you are there, then she wont get a big frieght when you open the nest up.

Hi. how old is the hen? By her iris she's atleast 5-make sure she gets plenty of calcium, protein and veggies. She's a little too old for breeding and complications are more likely. Best of luck with the eggies.
Squeak_Crumble
10-14-2007, 10:38 PM
shes max.4 becuase my friend (who i got it off) got 1 pair 4 years ago and they were a year old and there 2nd clutch had macadamia in it so really max.2 and half
Pippi
10-14-2007, 11:07 PM
three to six is normal, just keep a close eye on her vent and make sure that she has plenty of cuttle bone and she will be fine...
Squeak_Crumble
10-14-2007, 11:31 PM
is there a special food i can mix in their diet so they have more calcium like all my birds because there all lacking it and they have one in there but never eat it so is there a special mix i can put with there seed?? it would have to be something they can all eat. i think its called eggfood??
Pippi
10-14-2007, 11:38 PM
you can use egg food but it doesnt have alot of calcium in it to be honest, scrap the cuttle bone so that it forms a powder and put it in the seed and mix it through, the powder will coat the seeds and as they roll it around in thier beaks to husk it they will take it in. do this evry two or three days about a teaspoon full to 500g of seed.
Babyluv12
10-15-2007, 01:57 AM
Yup- cuttle bone scraped on veggies, seed, pellets, boiled eggs with shell (just mash it up)

huh??? when i say i dont know how i meen how to do it.i know you hold it up to a light but i cant understand with the light because if you do it with torch and point it at egg itll shine around it and go into your eyes.i really dont wanna put in a candle or the birds might freak and i dont want to take it out of cage or macadamia will freak!!! with the colour thing wat ya talkin about????:S :p crazy woman;) jokin!!! i looked before and the first seems bigger than second by a little bit
Pippi

You can candle an egg by holding it up to a very bright light. Make sure your hands are very clean, and hold the egg vertically, with the air-cell end, or fatter end up, to a bright light or flashlight. If the egg is dark, and you can't see through it, it's probably fertile. You may see dark vein-looking lines that sprawl out like a spider web, especially if you candle the egg early, and you will probably be able to see the air cell at the rounder end of the egg. If the egg looks clear (opaque yellow) all the way through, chances are it isn't fertile.
You can also tell by the egg color as fertile eggs well be bright white while infertile will be a dull white.

EGG 1 IS I THINK FERTILE 2 NOT!!! ok i just candeled them and egg 1 has this clear stuff around a oval triangle object!!! egg 2 i thought wasnt for the start because macadamia never sat on it really and i can see the air pocket but the rest is dark i know im probabaly wrong so correct me plz:o :o
Pippi
10-17-2007, 04:34 AM
if the rest is dark and you cant see through it I would say that its YAY fertile, as for the first one Triangle thingy I know its hard to explain, but fingers crossed its a yay for both.....

10-21-2007, 04:24 AM
ok well i think its the start of a ummmmmmmmmmm annoying(???) event. either crumble or mischeif have began laying infertile eggs and smashing them on the ground. i might have another breeding pair soon because when wizz is old enough he will do it most likely.whenever ozzie feeds macdamia through hole he sits on top of nest box and cocks his head and looks down!! LOL!!! whenever macadamia is out of nest he goes and peeps in !!! again LOL!! i call him Ozzies LOVE apprentice

Oh no!, i am so sorry....:(.
Pippi
10-29-2007, 06:45 AM
sorry to hear that squeak_crumble.....Now that they have had atleast one chick hatch they will go back to nest pretty quickly so be careful, If she proves to be a problem it may be best to put her in another cage if you have one. I have said in the past that I have had a hen alot like her...I used to put her in a spare cage with a mate and a nest box and leave it in the avairy as I didnt have room to put the extra cage and my folks would never let me have the birds in the house, It may sound cruel but it gives both pairs an opportunity to breed succesfully and hey most people have them in seperate cages paired up in bird rooms if they are unsuccesful in colony breeding.
Budgietom
10-30-2007, 03:04 AM
Oh no! I was shocked to hear that. That would have been heart breaking!!! I am so, so sorry. Is there anything I can do to help?
Yvain
10-30-2007, 04:55 AM
I'm really sorry to hear your story, I would strongly suggest to buy a cage large enough for breeding, rather than taking chances in colony breeding to avoid other hen attacks (like what happened with Crumble attacking Mac and Oz's nest). That's one sad disadvantage in colony breeding. Felt really sad bout your loss.... :(
Jessie
10-30-2007, 08:03 AM
Ohhh I'm so sorry to hear that Squeak. I have some fertile eggs right now also and I would be desistated if something happened to them. your other birds can have a successful clutch. I'm so sorry to hear about this.:(

10-31-2007, 03:03 AM
:( now crumble still wants it and poor mac doesnt have the strenghth to fight and had a big wound on cheek.(as big as pinky fingernil.
well i guess the good news is wizz is settlin in and miss and him are paired
xx-elaine-xx
10-31-2007, 06:35 PM
seperat the females or they will end up killing each other.and the worst thing to do is to colony breed.use breeding cages.its the best and there will be no hen attacks and chicks killed.
