hello, my name is brittany and im 17. i just got a green parakeet the other day, (sonny) and i have some questions...
1) he is a male and the only one i have. i want him to talk someday, and i heard that it has to think its part of the human "flock". i was just wondering if i could let it see out a window, so he is not so depressed.
2) can you guys give me some parakeet behaviors... like when they are mad, sad, scared, lonley ect...
please write me back asap cuz i am getting frustrated that i dont know what is best for my bird. :budgie:
Hey Brittany! Welcome to the site :) . I don't think letting him look out the window can hurt. Maybe a mirror or something would be good too if you feel he'll be lonely. If you do that then he might actually bond with the bird in the mirror. :P But since he's the only one, I think you'll be able to train him easier than if you had more than one bird. As for the behaviors, I'm not totally sure about those. I'll let someone else handle that question.
Glad you could join us. :)

Hi Brittany! Welcome to the site! Great questions!
As far as putting your budgie so he can see out a window, that's not a bad idea. Just make sure it's not in direct sunlight where it could get too hot or cold. Also to keep your little guy entertained, make sure you provide a variety of toys made of a variety of materials....like wood, plastic, fiber....bells...the possibilities are endless!
As for budgie behaviours, here we go:
A HAPPY budgie will often make a crunching type of sound from their beaks. That's called chewing the cud. They will do this as a sign of contentment. Happy budgies will also often sing, chirp and generally be active in their cage. They will eat well, take the occasional nap and just generally seem relaxed.
A MAD budgie will often squawk quite loudly, seemingly forever! What I do when my budgies do that is I cover their cages with a blanket to quiet them down and get them to relax.
A SCARED budgie will often hover in a corner of the cage and not move a whole lot. If there is a lot of noise or movement around them that is scaring them, they will often look around in all directions continuously to see if they can figure out where the threat is coming from. My budgies do that during thunder storms. Scared budgies will also sometimes cling to their perches or sides of their cages and just stay there until they relax a bit.
A LONELY budgie will often stay in one spot in their cage all day and not move around a whole lot except to maybe eat. They will generally not play with the toys in their cages either.
An EXCITED budgie will often run back and forth on their perches in their cages and chirp very loudly with abrupt chirps. My budgies do this sometimes when they really want out of their cages. It's so cute. Other excited behaviours include head bobbing and looking like they are dancing.
I hope this helps! If anyone has anything else to add, please feel free!! :p

letting him see outside is fine, but make sure that it isn't so close that it gets too much direct sun light. filtered light would be much better especially if the room tends to get warm.
Um...I have 4 budgies but I leave my screen open and when my one female hears teh other birds outside she goes nuts!Screeching and chirping all over teh place...she has problems:p (dont tell her I said that):p
