View Full Version : How-To Guides
You might have noticed the How-To Guides forum in the New Members Area for quite a long time and wondered what it was all about. I started it back in January and never finished it. Well, the staff has revived it and we've added several guides. Thus, I decided to open this up (finally) to the members.
What exactly are these guides? Well, for those new to forums, or those not too good with computers, these guides explain different features of the website and how to use them.
If you have any questions please ask.
(Note, the How-To Guides forum is read-only.)

I think this is a wonderful idea. This was the first forum I had ever joined and I really struggled with everything. Everyone was really nice when I asked for help but sometimes I was hesitant to ask. I know that others like me will really appreciate this. Thank you!!!!!

I wanted to mention here that if anyone has any specific requests for a how-to guide, please feel free to mention it. This is a work-in-progress so if you don't see a topic you'd like to have a tutorial on, let us know and we'll see what we can do to accomodate your request! :)

You beat me to it! :P If anyone has any questions or any suggestions, please let us know. We made these for you, so we want to work on topics that you are interested in.

I have a question about the Private Messaging system as I can't post in the How-To Guides I'll ask here. It says on the How-To Guide that no one can view our PM's other than those who recieve it, can Moderators and Super Moderators view them? I'm asking because a long time ago someone I know got Pm'd by a Super/Moderator and then they PM'd back saying something about another Super/Moderator. Then the Super/Moderator that was mentioned PM'd back saying that they saw that their name was mentioned and wanted to know why. I just want to know it the higher authorities on this site get to see the PM's or just talk amongst themselves about others.

That's a good question. I know for a fact that on another forum the admin. can see all pm's. I don't have a problem with that but if pm's are visible to ANYONE I think members have a right to know that.

A member's Private Messages are NOT visible to or readable by anyone but themself, with the exception of site administrators with access privileges.
While I am an administrator on this forum, I am not able to view the Private Messages of other members. Since Dave is the site creator and host of the forums, he is able to, although I know he does not customarily do this unless he has just cause.
Having said that, super moderators and moderators are NOT able to see other member's Privates Messages.
Does this clarify things enough? ;)
Yes, I do have access to the PMs since I do have access to the database. (In fact, I don't even go into the database unless I need to because it's a hassle.) However, I do not read anyone's PMs unless I have proper reason to. For example, if something was mentioned over PM and I was contacted from the authorities to disclose the PM, I would do so. Extreme cases like that are the only time I would access anyone's PMs. There's no need to get nervous.

Thank you Budgiekin and Dave for your explanation.
I have another question that might work in the How-to-Guide. When I click on New Posts and view the new posts, there are two icons on the left of each post. I have searched the forum and just can't seem to find where the meanings of these icons are expained. I read in a recent thread about how to mark a thread read but I can't seem to figure out what they said. It is probably something very simple but I need some help with this.
To mark a thread read, you either have to mark the forums as read or you have to visit the thread. Once you go into a thread it is marked read.
As for the icons, if you hover over them they should tell you what they mean. I know there are various types: new posts, no new posts, threads you have posted in, hot threads, etc.
