Hello Everyone,

When I bought my budgie, Sydney, I thought I was purchasing a male....hence the name Sydney! Well, Sydney turned out to be a female. She has been laying eggs, which I know happens. The problem is that after time, they are getting holes in them and leaking, sticking to her and I eventually have to throw them out. She then starts laying eggs again. She's on her third cycle of eggs. I've heard that there is a shot that the vet can give her to stop the egg laying. Is this something I should do or do I just let her continue with her eggs? She's eating well. I give her lots of veggies and she uses her cuttle bone frequently. She gets off of her eggs to come out of the cage and play everyday. Not sure what to do. Thanks in advance for your help.

My late budgie Greengrass did exactly the same thing. When we first bought her we thought she was a boy too and named her Sonny. Greengrass was just a nickname and after a while it stuck.
She must hast have layed about 20 eggs, none of which were fertilized. She would usually end up breaking them herself and we would have to throw them out. Greengrass went through periods of laying eggs but in the last year of having her, she stopped. It was a huge strain on her as she was older. We never took Green to the vets, she just stopped laying eggs. You could still take her to the vets, it's up to you. Keep us updated!

You could also purchase fake eggs and when she breaks her eggs replace them with the fake ones. I believe she keeps laying eggs to replace the ones she is breaking and are no longer there. Just a thought. Good luck.

Mine was laying eggs, but she would lay them while standing on a perch, so some would crack landing. Squeeky started breaking them, and I suspect she ate the contents of one egg. At least it was infertile. It was really funny watching Budgie trying to figure out how to sit on the eggs. For a while she ignored the egg and sat on her perch as if whe was brooding. The perch is one of those thick twisted rope perches. One day I bought the birds a new toy which happened to have a lot of beads on it that I suppose are somewhat egg sized so she decided to brood the beads as best she could. I took them out after a few days because I was worried that her skin would be irritated and she would be hurt. Then I had the idea that if I gave her the toy every few days for a day or two, she might get confused and not lay any more of her own. So far it seems to be working.

Another thing you can do to discourage egg laying is to rearrange her cage and provide new toys. This will focus her attention on things other than brooding behaviour. :p
