Weird and Wonderful Budgie Facts



1. budgies can register 150 images per second? Humans can only register 16 images per second.

2. budgies see the world in colour.

3. budgies can hear sounds from 400 to 20 000 Hz and can store sound sequences in their memory.

4. budgies have such a well developed sense of feeling that females can feel when the embryo is moving inside th egg and when the chick is getting ready to hatch.

5. budgies can count up to three.

6. budgies can turn their heads 180 degrees.

7. budgies poop every 12 to 15 minutes.


8. People say budgie parakeets have less feathers when they are younger. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!!!! They only have less feathers when they have been shocked or when they are shedding.
9.When budgies are sick, they do NOT eat more. In fact, they eat LESS that usual.
11. Is moulting a disease? OF COURSE NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is perfectly normal for a budgerigar parakeet to moult.
12. Budgerigars use their feet to eat like most parakeets. WRONG!!!!! Budgies, UNLIKE most parakeets, are one of the few species of parakeets that DON'T use their feet to eat.
13. Does an older parakeet differ from a younger parakeet when it comes to the noise it makes? NO. Whatever made you think that? It does differ, however, if you put more than 1 parakeet together or if it is in a noisy in the location they are put in. For example, if you put 1 parakeet in a noisy household, it will make more noise than a parakeet in a quiet household.
14. Did you know that budgerigars have the largest vocabulary out of all of the other species of parakeets? I bet you didn't. Gotcha there!
15. The colour of the nostrils determines the gender of the budgie. If it is pinkish-brown, it is a female. If it is purple or blue, it is a male.
16. Usually, a budgie parakeet lives to about 12-15 years, but if it is well cared for it might live up to 20.
17. Budgerigar parakeets are one of the most aggressive species among all of the species of parakeets.
18. Don't EVER feed a budgie chocolate! It is poisonous to them.
19. When budgie parakeets are young, they have a pink or beige cere, which is the skin above a budgies beak.
20. A shrill chirp from a budgie signals danger or alarm.
21. The budgie is also known as the Budgerigar, English Budgie, American Budgie, Melopstiiacus undulates, grass parakeet.
22. The word Budgerigar means good to eat in the ancient aborigine language! It's true!
Did you know that the oldest recorded pet Budgie lived to the age of 29 years and 2 months!

23. The budgie with the biggest Vocabulary was Puck, owned by Camille Jordan who was estimated to have learned 1,728 words by the time he passed away in Jan 1994!

24. Perhaps the most famous talking Budgie was Sparkie Williams who had a repetoire of eight nursery ryhmes, 360 different phrases and a vocab of 550 words. He died in 1962 after becoming a star after selling 20,000 copies of his record and featuring in so many radio programmes!

25. The average Budgie has three eyelids, an upper, a lower and a third which pulls across to protect its eyes!!!
26. Believe it or not, Budgies are also one of the best talkers of the bird world! Not all Budgies talk, of course, but many can learn.
27. The average life span is only about 10 years, but with proper care, nutrition, and veterinary attention, they can live to be 15 or 20 years old.

28. They need larger cages than you would think they need. I wouldn't put a Budgie in a cage smaller than 20" by 20" by 60", especially because most Budgies aren't taken out of their cages, they need the room to fly. If you house more than one Budgie together, you'll want a larger cage.
29. Most Budgies aren't cuddly. They might sit patiently on your shoulder for a bit, but they won't solicit head scratches like a Cockatiel would.

lets see I also have 2 half sistes, a full sister, a half brother and 2 step brothers and YET I AM THE ONLY CHILD!

at one time i've had 18 + dogs, 20 somthing rabbits and about 15 cats But we live on 7 acres and they had more then enough room

Hm... lets see, some special facts about me...

I'm such a big nerd, but you would never know it unless you knew me really well. I love computers and pretty much all aspects about them (except networking).

I like to cross stitch but I rarely have time to do so. I even won second place in a fair about five years ago.

I have a passion for the ocean and collect wooden birds, shells I find at the ocean, sand dollars and odds and ends I find that are beach and ocean related.

I have one brother who is 18 (I'm 21) and we are great friends, even though we fought all the time while growing up.

If I think of more, I'll let you all know. :)

and my mom ( technically my aunt - long story) Is related to the Ford Guy who Killed Jesse James !

I am a musician, I play piano, flute and guitar; and I also collect instruments - So far my collection consists of... - A piano - A keyboard - A flute - A piccolo - A didjeridoo - Two sets of panpipes - One electric guitar - One accoustic guitar - One electric accoustic guitar - A rainstick - An indian flute - An irish whistle - A tambourin - A djembe (african drum) - A harmonica - An occarina - And several small wooden flutey thing... basically I really like music :D

Another thing about me is I enjoy digital art... and practice all the time! (theres even a link to my gallery on my profile) And of course I like photography :D

I hate ice cream. Its revolting.

And my favourite food is spinach... second is cheese :D

hmm what else to say about myself... I have two brothers and theyre quite a bit older than me...

Oh I collect tea too! my tea collection.. Cranberry, rasberry, and elderflower tea, camomile & Spiced apple tea, Jasmine scented green tea, normal green tea, white tea, caramel tea, chocolate tea, licorice tea, melon and grape tea, wild berry tea, peach tea, dandelion tea, peppermint tea, cranberry and ennichia tea, apple and bluerry tea, fruits of the forest, sweet cranberry tea...melon tea... well you get the idea :D

Thats about it I suppose! :p

My electric acoustic is just rubbish... i got it off ebay and they lied as to what it actually was... They told me it was brand new ect, and it had the most dirty old strings on i'v ever seen in my life and the action was AWFUL. I'v fixed it up now but its still not brilliant :(
Its a very pretty colour though.. dark blue :D

And my acoustic is an old yamaha my dad rescued out of a cupboard at work haha! Its a good guitar though!

I used to play quite a bit but havn't lately... I can only finger pick, I could never use plectrums :P

ooh, my turn :)

I'm 1/4 English, 1/4 Swedish, 1/4 Polish, and 1/4 Finnish and I lived in Russia for 3 years. My wife is 1/2 Russian 1/2 Aerbaijanian, so our kids will be the typical American mutts that wont be able to remember what parts they are. :D But I speak fairly fluent (with a horrible accent) Russian and we're going to make sure they are bilingual.

I also play the guitar, I actually took piano lessons for 8 years before I stopped and taught myself the guitar. I have 2 older brothers and they both play too, so when we get together we jam. I crushed my left arm in a snowboarding accident when I was 17 so I had to re-learn to play guitar left handed. Now I have a 79 Gibson Les Paul Custom and a Yamaha acoustic (can't remember the model number.)
