Hi.
Well, my first budgie, who we called Arwen, unfortunately passed away on sunday. It was all of a sudden and i wasn't home to say goodbye. He was a few years old and we thought he was quite healthy. But I feel I could have prevented this...

We have also been looking after my sister's budgie, who is a bully. Like i mean seriously a bully, to everyone, even us. So much of a bully we don't touch her coz she will make us bleed. Anyway, the two budgies seemed to get along fine, we didn't see any dangerous actions between them, but I guess we were wrong.

Arwen had started to lose feathers on the top of his head, and we thought that the other budgie, bully oscar, was getting fatter. It now looks like Arwen was getting thinner. Anyway, we asked someone why he might be losing feathers, and they said it's probably because he's stressed from the bullying from the other budgie. So, we seperated them, but I think we were too late. A week later we found him on the bottom of his cage on his last legs.

I was out at the time so was unable to help my Dad. I don't know if I should get another one or not. Perhaps I'm not fit to care for another budgie, Arwen deserved better. He was the best budgie I could have asked for. Chirpy, happy, obsessed with my hands. I don't know if i could deal with losing another one, I never thought it would hurt this much.

Anyway, RIP Arwen, you were a great friend to me and I am forever grateful for your company.

I am sorry to hear of Arwen's passing. :( I think it is possible that Oscar was keeping Arwen away from the food, bully budgies will sometimes do that. Under the circumstances I don't think I would get another as a friend for Oscar but if you want to get another it would be better to put it in a separate cage. You said Oscar was your sister's budgie, how long had the two been sharing a cage?

My condolences to you.

Thank you.

My sister has just had a baby so they wanted us to look after Oscar so they could focus on the baby. They both had there own cages, but we would just open them up for them to roam free during the day. We've had oscar for about 4 months now.

If I was to get another one I definately wouldn't let it come in contact with Oscar.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss. :( I can identify with you when you said you didn't know it would hurt so much. When I lost Apollo, my first budgie I was completely devastated. It hurt me so much and I didn't want to go through that ever again, but I knew because I had two other budgies that it would someday happen again....And it did. I lost both Skyla and Kiwi within a few months of each other. Again, I was crushed both times. I still feel horrible when I think about it too much.

The way I look at situations like this is: If I could care and love a little budgie so much, then after he or she dies, why wouldn't I want to care and love another little budgie equally as much? I have so much to give them.... I hope you too will consider getting another one. In many ways, it can be seen as a tribute to your little Arwen if you did get another one.... At least that is how I tend to look at it.....

I am so sorry. RIP Arwen. :(

Oscar must have been pulling out the feathers on Arwen's head, Since a budgie cannot reach its head to pluck. I presume he starved to death since Oscar was hogging the food.

Again I am extremely sorry for your loss. :(

Oscar was probably pulling the feathers from Arwens head. My cockatiel is doing that to my other cockatiel and now he has a separate cage. He probably did not let him eat. Don't blame yourself. You had no idea. If you get another one now you will know. Can you sister take Oscar back? Maybe you could get two budgies from the same clutch. But take turns letting Oscar out from the new ones. good luck and remember it is not your fault. Get yourself another budgie you deserve it.

Oscar has gone home and apparently has been behaving since... Perhaps Oscar knows what she has done now.

Thank you for all your kind words, you have been a massive help. It still hurts of course, so I'm still juggling the idea of getting another budgie. Like you said Budgiekin, I do see getting another one as a tribute to Arwen. I will be doing a bit of research before I do though, most of it on here probably.

For example, is it better to get 2 budgies so they have a friend? And should I get it/them from a breeder or should I save them from the pet store?

just wondering are you tiels a boy and a girl? if so with cockatiels the male will pull the fethers out on the females head and neck when they are ready to breed also if your girl is a lutino (pure yellow) it is a genetic deformaty that they are born with. (there bald behind the crest) :)

Its hard to lose a budgie, but don't blame yourself.
You did the right thing by seperating them.

this is very sad. I'm very very sorry to hear about this. I truly feel for you and I don't want to know that hurt, it's a hurt I dread everyday. I'm so sorry for you.

But Arwen is flying high in the great skies of heaven right now, i'm sure and nothing can hurt him now.

That's sad poor Arwen :( You should rescue a budgie from the humane society if you can. I think Arwen would of liked that :)
