Sad but strange story..

My first budgie Gabby was a beautiful white and blue budgie and I loved her so much. But one day when I was playing with her on my bed all of a sudden lots of blood falls on to my bed and I panic. So firstly I look where the blood is coming from and it's from her foot, I was so confused because she wasn't hurt there before or anything. It seemed to be some sort of a freak accident.. So I put pressure on the wound to stop the bleeding but it didn't stop and I didn't have any styptic powder so I used flour and it still didn't stop. So I put a special cream on to stop bleeding but nothing helped and I was alone at my house and I didn't know the phone number to any nearby avian vet and i'm too young to have my own car so I put her back in her cage because I didn't want to make things worse. Then I came back a few minutes later and she was lying on the bottom of the cage and she had died. I was really sad so I buried her and I tried to figure out why she had all of a sudden started bleeding. I still can't figure it out. Does anyone have an idea why the bleeding started? And what did I do wrong? I really would like to know why so that if ever something horrible like that happened again I would know what to do.
It was one of the worst days of my life. And the worst part was when I was holding her in my hands while she was alive and whle I tried to help her and she got weaker and weaker with all the blood she kept losing.

I am unsure about what happened, I'm assuming your bird hurt its foot somehow. :(

I am so sorry to hear that. It probably would not have made any difference but you would have had to keep applying pressure until it stopped. The wound may have just been too big. Budgies don't have a lot of blood so it wouldn't take a lot of bleeding to be fatal. :( It sounds like you did the best you could under the circumstances. It was a tragic accident. Hugs.

Try to look around your room and cage to see if she might have landed on something sharp.

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear about this. What an unfortunate incident indeed. :(

It is possible that your little sweety may have broken a toe nail. It may not sound all that severe, but if you consider the fact that if the nail broke where the vein is located in the nail, budgies can bleed quite profusely from that.....

I am really sorry for poor Gabby.. It's a damned feeling, to feel helpless without the possibility to offer any help to a suffering pet.. Hope that someday you'll have another budgie to take care of and love.

I thought of the nail thing too. Maybe it got stuck on something and pulled off or broke. That seems like the only logical thing

Maybe if the bird was on your bed, it got its nail caught in the threads of the sheets? Then it broke or got pulled off?

I am sorry for your loss. I also thought of the threads on your bed. They are so fine and could cut the feet very bad. Rub your hand on your bed and see if you find any threads. Sometime the threads are more like an invisible wire but very thin. My son got his hand stuck in that one time and cut himself. I threw it away.
