Help...with school starting up again, i won't be home nearly as much as i was during the summer, so I wanted to get a friend for Diego, my bird, because he lives alone. The problem is, I don't know how to convince my mom to let me get another budgie. I had a hard time convincing her to let me get ONE. She says that Diego doens't need a friend (which is WRONG) and that he will be fine while I am gone at school and practices (of which I am not convinced. My brother and sister and mom would be home, but none of them really know how to play with Diego, or they really could be indifferent.
I also am pretty sure that were i to get another bird, I would need a bigger cage (current one is 15 in. by 15. in wide and 23 1/2 in high) But out of all the pet stores I have visited, it was the biggest one I could find. There was also the proble of where to put it...:( :(

I had only one budgie all through jr high and highschool and he did just fine but I can completely understand how you would want a friend for Diego. It would be in his best interest to have a birdie buddy.
As a mom myself I can only tell you what my kids do to convince me when they want something. Dazzle her with knowledge :) Go to the library and get a book on budgies and have her read what it says about them being social creatures. Find articles online about the same thing and ask her to read them.
Offer to do extra chores (an actually do them, my kids often promise and then never really do what they said they would and it drives me nuts!!!) and earn the money for the new bird. Keep your eye open for a larger cage at garage sales or a flea market if you can.
I'm a softie when it comes to new pets so it's usually easy for my kids to convince me when they want a small one. My daughter has been begging me for a skunk, but I have to draw the line somewhere!

THanks Topaz, I will try your advice. It's great stuff, especially coming from someone who has been through the same thing!:)

Have you Looked on Craigslist? I've seen a ton of bird cages in my area on there, Just pick your state, Your town ( or one that is really close if they don't have your exact town) and go to Pets

I even found 2 Parakeets and the cage for $20.00 but it was in Ohio, and my Mom isn't coming out to Indiana to visit me until November , So i didn't want to ask her ' hey mom will you go get these 2 birds and bring em with you when you come visit me?" my mom is really nice and cool BUT NOT that nice, she wouldn't let me own a bird of any kind when i lived with her ! LOL

and as already suggest, Do extra stuff around the house, what works really great is when you do things you were never asked to do, But you seen it needed done and just did it!

some great ways for youngins to earn extra money ( at least in my area), is to go help the Elderly , mow thier lawn, Rake the leaves ( fall is comming leaves are gonna start falling and the elderly just shouldn't be out raking or mowing NO matter how healthy they think they are :-) ) Run errands for them

if you have stores in walking distance, and you know your mom needs a few things from the store, Like a gallon a milk a loaf of bread etc, Ask her if you can walk to the store and pick those up for her

other ways i Sweetened the deal with my mom, was I did alot of stuff i was never told to do, I'd go out and mow the lawn with out my parents asking me, If i over head my dad saying the lawn needed mowed this weekend , I'd stop what i was doing ( unless it was homework) and go right then and start mowing it ( but we had 7 acres and he worked at least 6 days a week sometimes 7 days a week) so I know it helped him when I'd mow the lawn, feed the dogs, change the dogs hay for him with out ever being told

I had my own chores, Dishes, cleaning my room things like that, BUT when ever i wanted something I'd go above and beyond to do extra things and then after I got what i wanted, I kept doing those extra things, to show my parents I wasn't just doing it to get what i wanted

Before long i was getting $20 a week to mow my own lawn, Because i did it with out being told and kept doing it every week with out being told

hope that gives some ideas, Oh and since you got siblings if ya'll bicker and fight, KEEP it to a minimum or stop it all together PARENTS love when their kids get along :)

I agree with atvchick95! That is where I got Aster and Lily...Aster I got from a lady that breeds parakeets for $5 and Lily was $5 with a cage too, cause the lady was scared of birds! Definitely check out Craigslist.

Also and more importantly, try to take everyones advise about helping and raising your own money...parents always respect their kids when they take responsibility, mine did.

Good luck to you!

whats craigs list

it is like a huge classified ad You pick the state you live in, and then a town ( my state i can get my exact town, In my moms state where i used to live it didn't have our exact town, i had to go to the next state to get close to her house)

then you just pick a category you want, Pets, free, computers, furniture etc and go from there

www.craigslist.com

is how ya get there :)
