View Full Version : What do you think this baby's mutation is?

I'm just starting to understand a little about this stuff... could you help me out? I have Skye and Pete. I believe you would say Skye is a normal (sky blue or cobalt?) dominant pied and Pete a normal green. They just hatched their first clutch and their first two babies (the ones that have visible feathers) look so different already at only 10 and 12 days old. Any idea what they will turn out to be? Does the little bald-looking spot on the top of the older one's head mean he/she will be a dom. pied or a monk?;) I also think it is interesting that the older one's wings are mostly dark, but the tips where the flight feathers will be are light. The first two are so different already, I can't wait to see what the third will look like!:budgie: This stuff is really interesting!

Thanks in advance,
Carol

The one with the bald spot on the back of the head could end up having the white thumbprint that is characteristic of a dom. pied. The white flight feathers also indicate a pied, or a clearfligh, but since one of the parents is a pied, I think you'd end up with a pied.

I'm not too bad with mutations, but I am really terrible with genetics so I can't tell you what you'll end up with by looking at the parents, but if no one answers you about it, you can post pics of them in a few days and I may be able to tell you more :). Somebody will probably come along before that though, and ruin my fun :P

The biggest one is a green dominant pied. Do you have a closer photo of the smaller one?

Here's a couple of close-ups of #2, this one's a little climber... he/she uses that beak and just climbs like crazy all over my hands and shirt! Those eyes have got me turned to jelly...:p

Such cute babies.
I am seriously thinking about setting up a pair of budgies so that I could have a true handfed, handraised baby one day.

Hints from the parents and the pin feathers. We know that the parents are green dad and dominant pied blue mum. Green is the dominant colour, so we know that if we can see yellow pin feathers showing through then it's a green baby. Blues would be a suprise from this pairing. Then you can also see unusual markings already showing on the first baby, so it's obviously a dominant pied green (yellow pin feathers).

Thanks! Since posting those pictures, the youngest has started showing his pin feathers; he/she will be another dominant pied like the oldest with that same little yellow thumb print on the top of the head. How cute! Now, when you say green... does that mean that their beautiful yellow will disappear???

I can't wait to see how beautiful my babies will be! (Well... they're beautiful now... but you know what I mean... :D) I also can't wait to find out who's male and who's female... maybe then we can settle on some names...
