Well, our adventure started like many before, I'm sure. This was an oopsie coupling. When we got our budgies (about two weeks apart from different places) they were young and we were inexperienced; we had no idea how to tell gender nor did we figure it mattered. We figured Pete was a boy, and the lady at the pet shop told us she thought Skye to be a boy, too... Anyways, they are both at least 2 years old now. Over time I figured out that Skye was a female (a bit testier than Pete, to say the least), and when she began sitting in the corner with her tail up and emptying her seed bowl I thought she was just nutty. Now that I've been reading here... well hind sight is 20/20, isn't it? At the time I thought a hanging hut would give her some repose and improve her mood, so I hung one. A few days later there were 2 little eggs with one more to follow that same evening. In the end there were 5... 3 hatched, one dud, and one got kicked out (not sure why as he seemed okay in there).
Rest assured, I do not intend to further encourage any breeding endeavors; I am covering the cage for 12 hours or more each night, giving Pete (and later Skye, too) "cold showers" (with warm water), and as soon as the little ones are older I will move things around in there often to keep everyone occupied else-wise. If these tactics fail and I catch them mating again I will be forced to separate them :( , but I really hope I don't have to do that. (I've also purchased plastic replacement eggs for later, just in case...)
Anyways... for now I have 3 new photo subjects to enjoy and a wonderful board of people with whom to share! I look forward to updating often!
Thanks for everything!
