View Full Version : Homemade Perches
I've been meaning to do this for ages!!! I finally made my own natural perches tonight. I got the stainless steel hardware from www.myparrotshop.com for much cheaper than i have been able to find them locally, so i'm happy!

I took the bark off because it looks prettier, hehe!

Close up of the hardware end.
For the second perch i added beads and buttons and stuff to chew! It's a play-perch! :D

Now i've just got to decide who gets what perch! ;)

Looks fabulous! What type of branch did you use? I've been using apple and pear branches because that's what I have available to me. Did you choose seasoned branches or fresh? Also, did you use leather or cotton cording for the toys?
Sorry for all of the questions, I just love it when someone uses their noggin and creativity. :D
They are eucalyptus branches that came down in a storm the other day, stripped all the bark with a stanley knife. I used vegetable tanned leather cord to put the beads on, it looks more natural so is good for a wooden perch in my opinion. ;)

I love your idea, I just wonder how do you insert the hardware? I want to do something like that did you use a drill? Also just a thought, I bought my birds this wood tree branch that had toy wooden hearts and beads on it and it had the bark on it. In a week they had all the bark stripped off. And they had so much fun picking it off. So I really like what you did as it looks nice. But I bet the birds would love to pick at the bark:D I know mine would. At any rate you did a great job. I wish I had a drill. Or any real good tools to do stuff like that.
You need a drill to put the hardware in. The hanger bolt is half ***** and half thread. You drill a hole, ***** the ***** bit in, and then you attach the washers and wingnut to the thread. :)

That's so cool! Why didn't I think of that? *mumble*
Hmmm, we're having bad weather, so I'll keep an eye on that randomly placed eucalyptus tree in town ;)
We used to have a eucalyptus tree in our primary school yard, but it got cut down because of some wall or something.
I could've had all the branches I wanted!
Good idea :)

I found this site listing wood that is safe to use for perches:
safe wood for perches (http://www.exoticbird.com/gillian/perch.html)
The list looks like it was compiled for Macaws, but I'm sure these are safe for other parrots as well.
Elsewhere on the site it says that the person who compiled this list is a toxicologist, so I assume she knows what she's talking about (although you'd think a toxicologist, as a scientist, would know the difference between a species and a genus...).
I'm sure some of those trees grow in New Jersey or PA! Although you should try not to use branches from trees that have been exposed to high levels of car exhaust or chemicals like sprayed insecticide, to be on the safe side.

That is an awesome perch you made your birdies...They are going to love it.
What tree did you use to make this perch? Was this wood from your own yard?

What a great idea. Here in Cali, the local Home Depot has all the hardware you need too.

in the US, you can get the hardware from Lowe's or Home Depot... I've made something similar with my perches from a tree that was recently fallen from a lightening strike. But I like the second one with the beads hanging off.. a great idea!

I used branches from a eucalyptus tree, i found them at the local park. :)

Unfortunately we here in Nova Scotia , Canada haven't the climate for growing Eucalyptus ... however, we do grow great snowmen ...hehehehe
Can you suggest somewhere I could get Eucalyptus at a reasonable price??

Wow... those perches look fantastic! I love the beads! :)
I have a chestnut tree in the backyard, and I use some of the thin branches stripped of all the bark in Billie's cage. Although they don't look as pretty as yours, he loves it! :p

I got some apple tree branches today and was wondering if you need to wash them off or anything before putting them in the cage with your birds? :S
