I am very sad to say that our poor baby Nugget died this morning. We don't know what happened. She was fine until about 9pm yesterday when she started to show that she was sick. She fluffed her feathers and started throwing up. We watched her for a while. All she did was sit on her perch with her eyes closed and her feathers fluffed. I try to see what her droppings were like, but I didn't see anything abnormal. I was gonna take her to the vet today after work, but she was already dead when we woke up this morning.
My husband and I have been trying to figure out what could have happend. First I was concerned that it could have been from the chemicals I used in another room earlier in the day, but Jack-Jack is fine. I imagine it would have affected both of them. Plus, Nugget didn't seem to have any respiratory problems. She wasn't coughing, sneezing or wheezing. She was just throwing up seeds and green liquid. I can only thing that she ate something bad, since she was always chewing any anything she could find.
What do you think?

It's obvious that I have to get another bird for my Jack-jack. He is showing clear signs that he is depressed and lonely. Since my husband and I both work all day, he needs a companion to keep him company.
I know they both need to be quarantined for some time. Is it right to get a new one right away and keep them separate for 2 weeks? During that period, can they see each other or do they need to be in separate rooms? I'm not too sure how to go about this.

I'm so sorry for your loss :(
quarantine time is 30-45 days, in seperate rooms, with NO contact.

ok, but what do I do about poor Jack-Jack? He is so lonely. When I first took Nugget out of the cage, Jack-jack was calling out to her. I feel so sorry for him.

he will mourn for a bit, but in the meantime, leave a radio on for him. Since you dont know what happened to your hen, he could be sick too, and you dont want to get a new bird sick. plus, the new addition can have a hidden sickness too. in the long run, its best for all to quarantine for 30-45 days, with no exceptions.

Oh I am so sorry to hear about Nugget! It seemed like things progressed rather rapidly with your sweety. I am glad you are considering getting Jack a new friend so he doesn't get lonely. Unfortunately, he will have to be alone for the quarantine period as Buuzbee mentioned, but after that (assuming they both seem well), then they can join each other... :)

I think we figured out what happend to Nugget. On the jungle gym we have for them, there is a rope walkway. They shred and chew the end of the rope and it is all frayed now. It seems likely that Nugget swallowed a thread from the rope. I saw her chewing on it yesterday, hours before she got sick. When my husband touched that part of the rope, pieces of thread fell out very easily. I am absolutely getting rid of that to make sure this doesn't happen again.
I'm pretty angry that there are such toys that are dangerous. I will definitely be m ore careful next time.

My beloved Nugget died Monday morning. She was so young, only 8-10 months. She was such a lovable, silly, funny, beautiful baby. We will truly miss her.

We had a bit of a scare today. This evening, Jack-Jack starting showing the same symptoms as Nugget. He was sleepy and throwing up. We immediately took him to a vet emergency center. They said there were no obvious problems, but they gave us a strong dose of antibiotics and antifungal medicine. I'm hoping it's not too late. We will watch him tonight and pray he's still alive tomorrow morning. We can only cross our fingers and hope the medicine didn't come too late.
If we lose him too, I don't think we want to keep Daisy. It would just be too painful. Hopefully it won't come to that. I'll keep you posted.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of Nugget. I would recommend spending a lot of time with Jack-Jack so that you can both mourn together and be there for each other in this tough time. He will greatly appreciate your company.
Have a playlist filled with his favorite songs ready on shuffle when you are away and that will help him a lot.
RIP Nugget. May you fly high on Rainbow Bridge you beautiful budgie.

To our surprise, Jack-jack is alive this morning! We honestly weren't expecting that. He was acting like himself when we got him home last night, and again this morning, but it doesn't mean all is well. It was very difficult, but we gave him some more medicine this morning. He has a pink face now cuz most of it got on him rather than in him, but I think he got enough. Our next step is to see that he is ok when we get home.
As far as Daisy goes, she has something wrong with her too. Hopefully it'll pass though. Whatever it is came from the pet store, cuz we've kept them in separate rooms and washed our hands between birds. She isn't acting sick, but her droppings are very abnormal. They are very liquid and dark green. Her butt has gotten very dirty from it. It's upsetting cuz she was perfectly clean when we bought her. I've been using antibiotics on her too, but only the store bought stuff. As long as we still have Jack-jack, if she isn't better in another week, I'll ask for Rx strength antibiotics from the vet to clear up whatever is wrong with her.
Being a parent is way too stressful!!

You really have your hands full. When Spice first got sick I tried those pet store antibiotics but they didn't work. Ended up at the vet. He had a sinus infection and had his sinuses flushed then meds. You are right, being a "parront" is stressful.
