I was told the best thing to clean bird cages with , is a equal part of vinegar and water - its safe and they say it cleans the cages nicely, and easily

Water and vinegar is the best thing for me. Get a clean *never used before* spray bottle, fill it with half vinegar, half water (warm), get some papertowels, a hard bristle brush for stuck on poop and clean away.;)
I use hot water and a cloth. :) I dry everything once i've wiped it all down too.

Today I was at the pet store and I found a new product made by Simple Solutions called "Bird Cage Wipes". They seem very similar to wet wipes and the only ingredients are purified water, natural enzymes and mild cleansers. It's safe to use on bird cages, perches, bird toys and more.
I used these new wipes today during my complete head to toe clean and rearrangement of all toys, playgym and cages and these wipes were just amazing!! They had a light fragrance that wasn't overbearing at all. They quickly dissolved the droppings in the cage and on the toys. I would recommend this product to any bird owner.
Stains and droppings came off much easier using these wipes and was much quicker and easier than any solution I've ever used. Even though the product is bird safe, I would recommend wiping everything down with a wet towel after cleaning and dry off with a dry one.
I just can't say enough great things about these bird cage wipes!! After spending about three hours completely disinfecting the cage exterior, interior, toys, perches, and everything else, I feel that it has never looked better or cleaner. I got the Simple Solution, bird cage wipes at Petsmart so hopefully they are now available at most pet stores. :)
Is the brand Poop-Off? I read on another forum that someone had been using them, and the place where they were most heavily used (the grate under her birds sleeping perch) started losing the powder coating. Most on this forum concluded that good old hot water/water and vinegar were best overall. ;)

I hope you don't take this the wrong way Kristen. Just had to add something...I love how they try to make it seem like it's so safe and natural...what are the mild cleansers??? Oh..and if you don't mind how much did they cost?

I just take the cage apart and scrub everything down with hot water and liquid anti-bacterial soap. (I use an old toothbrush to scrub with.) I definitely make sure I rinse things well and then I wipe everything dry.

The brand is Simple Solutions. Aly, good point about the mild cleansers. I will have to do some research on the product and see if I can find out exactly what the mild cleansers really consist of. I think it was around $10 but I don't remember the exact price.
Thanks Bea and Aly for the concern! I will do some resarch to see if I can find out anything regarding the quality and safety of the product and update you. :)

The Simple Solutions website didn't offer any answers so hopefully I'll be able to find some information elsewhere. I do know that they've received some awards for pet cleaning products for dogs though and have been mentioned on Animal Planet which offers some positive info on their products.
I might try using a test perch that I don't use and try the product on it every few days and see if there are any negative side affects associated with the use of this product over time.
All I know is despite the lack of information, I was very pleased with the results from this product and unless I find out about any harmful ingredients used in it or negative side affects associated with it's use, I'll continue using it for cage and perch cleaning.

Thank you for the warning, Aly. I'm confident that this product is safe but you offering your advice really does help me become more aware of the possibility of hazards. It's great to know you are so helpful for all members and aren't afraid to offer your opinions for the sake of all of our budgies. :)

I clean down Grace's big cage and Soula's little quarantine cage twice a week. I clean down my other 3 cages once a week (since they arent in use)
I first rinse off with hot water and a scrubby and then soak it in disinfectant water with soap. Scrub again and then rinse with hot water. Dry and reassemble. :)
