Just thought i might get this up and running. As most of you know i was planning to breed my two budgies Toby and Nanari, well the time has finally arrived, a bit too early for my liking but i have no choice. Now please dont get angry at me for this but they are outside BUT! it is warm outside, they are under COMPLETE cover and there is NO WAY they can get wet or harmed. Eggs probably arent coming until a long time but they should arrive.....sometime. Here are are pics of the parents:
Nanari (Mum)

Ok...no one has notied this thread yet... oh well. Anyway i think they might have started mating, they have already bonded without the nesting box so it should be a short time before eggs arrive...maybe. I think they have started mating because Nanari's feathers on her back are ruffled and Toby is now a tad more defensive. I Finally put shavings into the nestin box in a pile. Why a pile you may ask? because i can see wether they are checking it out if the pile is spread out! (you probably knew that already though lol). Hoping for Nanari to be eggnant, but no confirmation just yet lol. Also Barty is VERY loud and i read that noises from other budgies can stimulate breeding and so can rain, and it rained here last night. Dont worry the birds didnt even get a drop on thier cage. So yeah, thats the update so far, i'll try and take more pics now and post them in the next entry of this journal i post :) .

Sorry if I sound rude in any of this, if I say something to offend anyone it wasnt my intention ;) . Just wanted to say, please dont give any in-depth advice on me breeding Toby and Nanari i have a pro budgie breeder where i buy my birds from and i am getting all of my advice from him and he has so many heathy birds, so whatever he is doing he is doing the right thing. I just want this to be a journal of photo's and just talking about breeding them. Reason being is that i dont want this journal turning into a big argument, this is like Toby and Nanari's future children's baby book :baby:. Once again sorry if anyone took offence to this.
P.S: Taking update photo's now.

Ok the pics are FINALLY here. Dont ask about the dirtyness of Barty's cage, I have been so busy this week with school and stuff so i had no time to clean the cage, i feel so guilty :( . I will do it tommorow even though i do have sport tommorow i WILL find time to clean it out.

Breeding is a big responsibility. You should read the following article by softie on breeding. It seems you are busy now with school and stuff, you might want to re-think your options.

I really do think your budgies are adorable. Your pictures are very sweet.
I am curious to know how old they are? Neither of them look mature enough to be mating as their ceres haven't completely changed colour yet....:S

They are both pied so thier ceres never change colour, they stay the same throghout. You can tell the difference by the pinkness in the females ceres. I have had toby for over a year and Nanari is defintly over a year too.;) .

Thankyou clifff123 for that link :) . I have done my fair share of research. Anytime i am bored now i just look up pages on budgie breeding. This thread will not be updated until a LONG LONG time, not until the eggs are close to hatching, because this is a journal and i dont want to overload it with stuff before the eggs even arrive. Also, if i need to ask questions about breeding i will make a new thread in just the normal breeding section. Thanks, i'm just going to check the nesting box now to see if the shavings have been moved or kicked out, i will keep you updated  .

Stick to your guns brown994, your birds are adorable and will produce some really cute babies, breding budgies maybe a hugh responsibility but it is one of the most rewarding hobbies as well, I used to breed and show bugies when I was at school and managed to do it well for years, even in my senior years at school. I am glad to hear that you have the support of a good mentor/fellow breeder. Goodluck, I will keep my eye on your thread.

Some bad news, but dont worry its nothing majorly dreadful. It's just that Toby and Nanari were an unsuccessful pair, very unsuccesful actually they wouldnt sit on the same perch, not eat together and they never really bonded, if Toby tried grooming nanari it wouldnt be pretty and i think Nanari was a bit immature to breed too. I moved her to be Barty's partner is that ok????. I also got a new girlfriend for Toby and she is violet, blue colour and still dosent have a name. .

Don't worry if you keep your birds outside. I always leave my birds outside too and they are always undercover and high enough so they don't get into harms way. Budgies enjoy the fresh air as they do in the wild.
It is bad to deprive them of that and keep them inside all day. Sorry I can't help you on the breeding because I haven't tried to breed my budgies before. They are too young.
GoodLuck

Thanks, i suppose your right. But i always bring them inside during a storm but i cant bring Toby inside while he is breeding it would disturb the pair too much but they are safe where they are ;).

is there anyway to change the name of this to Toby and Violet???. Anyway back to the updates!. Toby is still trying to convince Violet into the Nesting box and she is showing great intrest in it too. eg. Looking inside, speding a large amount of time on top of it, chewing the sides of it and suchlike. I think its also possible that they have mated before but i cant be sure because i have seen Toby chasing Violet and putting his foot on her but then she runs away.

Some major updates. Toby has been inside the nesting box and possibly Violet has too, but there is no way to be sure. Toby has started to feed Violet and she follows him around waiting for it. Her interest in the Nesting Box has increased greatly but she is still in love with her pink mineral block in which she perches to sleep and its her personal space the mineral block is needed for breeding so i cant take it out so she spends more time with toby but its ok, she dosent have to spend all of her time on the nesting box just some of her time which she is doing. Toby has started following her around and still trying to get her into the nesting box. Does anyone think that eggs are in the near future?..

I may be just getting my hopes up but when i checked on the budgies today and to change their water i noticed Violet's lower half (you know) looked a little bit bigger, but then again it was a little chilly today and i cant be sure i will go and check again now. I think Barty is helping them along too since he makes so much noise!..

Ok, i have a few update pics, sorry they arent very good the camera was REALLY low on battery so i had to be very quick. Aslo, trying to tame Barty not proving too easy i was holding him today and he jumped up and bit me on the lip, it REALLY hurt and it still is it even brought tears to my eyes!. I held Violet to see if she had an egg, nothing. Well anyway here are the pics:

(taken about 5 mins before he bit me lol) Some how that little wollen toy seems to creep its way into every photo taken in that cage!

YAY!, some progress with Violet!. She may have gone inside, yes INSIDE the nesting box. I dont know for sure but she was sitting on the small perch on the outside of the nesting box for acess to it!. I think eggs arent very far away now :D..

Goodluck and make sure you know EVERYTHING possible to keep these little guys and their possible future babies safe, healthy and cared for. Breeding is a big job and if done at the right time, can have alot of rewards. Another two important things that you must have are time and space. If you and your babies are well prepared then you're good to go. Here is a great link that I like http://budgieplace.com/breeding.html

I don't know, have you taken the very first pics at night ?! they are terribly cute but if that was in the morning i think ur cage is too dark , the more light there is in their room and cage, the more thay are happy, vocal and the more that they are stimulated to breed, if u keep the curtains closed why not try opening them to allow some brighter light( not diect sunlight) to enter their cage?! Increasing the day light hours makes them more fond of breeding, Im happy ur birds are starting to gain breeding interest but im pretty sure more light will be helpful
Brown9944
10-24-2007, 07:43 AM
Yeah, i thought someone would ask this question. We do have a cover over the cage to protect them from nasties but we also have a place where light can shine through. They certinaly get enough light i think a factor of the cage looking darker too would be the quality of the camera :)..
P.S: Sorry you mean the very first pics, in that case it is the camera, i dont why they look so dark!. The first few pics at the top here were taken at night and the latest ones in they afternoon :)..

yeah i can see there's light in the last pics u posted...by the way lovely birds :)
So...how's toby and violet doing?! and how's nanari with her new friend barti ?! any new events?
Brown9944
10-24-2007, 07:49 AM
Thankyou, they are doing fantastic! I even have a hunch that Violet has gone into the nesting box!. I'm sorry you probably havent heard this yet because it was kept so quiet but Nanari passed away about a week ago from a heart attack or stroke or wild bird attack. But Barty is going fine I am trying to tame him and it is proving difficult!..

oh my dear im so sorry about ur nanari....she was a very cute bird...hope she rests in peace and u have a bunch of very nice babiesfrom toby and violet, good luck with taming barty, if he's a bad biter there are methods to stop biting, first of all birds bite when they are afraid ,if u chase him with ur hand or finger then dont cuz he bites if hes afraid and that is for sure making him stressed, try to make him gain confidence in you by feeding him seeds or giving him pieces of his fave treat with your hands,,,to make him step up ,have some seeds in ur hand ,feed them to him 2 make him know u mean no harm then make him step up after his done immedietally another way is put some seeds in ur palm and make him stand on the side of ur hand to eat them and while hes eating he wont notice hes on ur finger after a few times hell get used to you, for biting try blowing a puff of air in his face when he bites to stop him or hold a spray bottle and squirt some water in his face when he bites,Another very efficient way with some birds is clicker training, its like a rewarding training u can search for info about it if everything fails, with these methods even the nastiest birds can be improved
Good luck
Anna xx

Thanks, i will be sure to try that with Barty ;) i tamed Toby easily and i dont know how i managed to do it! lol but he is the opposite of tame when he has eggs! i go to have a look inside and he wont hear of it! but i suppose its his nature, he is very tame when not breeding you can do anything and he wont bite!. Anyway back to the breeding. I think that some of the shavings have been kicked out!! (this is both a good and a bad thing) with previous experiences this is done about a few days before laying! but then again i cant find any of them in the tray at the bottom of the cage or on the ground, but they have certinaly been moved around by either Toby or Violet :D. If anyone could possibly tell me what colours the babies would be that would be great! :). Also waht mutation is Violet??. Thanks..

Still no egg laying progress yet :( but still all hope is not lost. Toby, yes, Toby had been going into the nesting box alot, I wonder if that is normal. Also i saw him "kissing" here meaning regurgitating food to Violet about 1 week ago and if i go near the cage to change seed/water he will fly and "defend her". It's been 3 weeks now... ..
