View Full Version : First Baby Due Tomorrow!

Alright, so some of you may know that this is both my and my budgies' first time breeding. They have 5 eggs (I haven't candled them so I don't know how many are fertile). The first egg is due to hatch tomorrow:D , and I'm expecting that it will, as Sparky (the female) sat on them from day 1.
I guess I really just want to use this thread to post updates/pictures and to ask questions/seek advice...:)

Thanks everyone. As of yet, there are still 5 eggs, but it's still much too early to say whether the first egg will hatch today.
Fingers crossed, it will hatch later today.
For the time being, here's a pic of the eggs.:p

Well, the day is practically over (at least for the budgies - it's their bedtime), and we still have no bubs. I'm really not disappointed though, because the fewer eggs that actually hatch, the greater the chance that I'll be able to keep them all for myself.:p
My ideal first clutch would be 1 to 3 chicks.

I'm sorry but I couldn't help noticing that you have the nest box perch inside of the box. You are actually supposed to push it through so it is on the outside. :) I couldn't quite figure that out when I first bought a nest box.
Hope to hear that a baby hatched. :)

Congratulations on your little budgie family and the five eggs!! Be patient, the time will come soon and it will be soo exciting for both you and your budgies!! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask away!! I bred my love birds years ago and had some difficulty due to the mom and dad feeding and taking care of their babies up until a certain point where they started attacking them. :( Hopefully you wont have to deal with the ordeal that I had to! Good luck!!

Ok, so I'm practically freaking out right now (but with reason of course).;)
I just opened the nest box and one of the eggs is cracked, and you can see a pink blob pushing its way out. You can even hear it chirping from 10 feet away.
I'm sooooooooooooooo excited.:D :D :D
I'll update you guys again later today.

Thanks everyone for all of your comments. :) I'll probably be full of questions, as the chick begins to grow so it's nice to know that the more experienced will be able to guide me through it.
And thanks for the tip about the perch in the nest box.;) I honestly had no clue that you could push it out...but I'll do as you said when the mom comes out.

Alright, so the baby hatched this morning and it pretty much looks the same now as it did then. So I was wondering how long the baby feeds off the yolk and when to intervene if the parents don't feed.

Congrats on the baby! To be on the safe side I would say 6 hours is a safe time to wait. If not, do the first feeding (just to fill the crop a little).

Congrats on the new baby. I hope you get a couple more to hatch as well. I wold love to have babies. Well mine are very young so I need to do all my research and wait a year. But congrats I wish you well

congrats on the baby and good luck!! Babyluv is right I think in the first feeding within 6-8 hours. I lost my first one (last week) about 12 hours after bub hatched because mom didn't feed. Lost the second one too, but unsure as to why. But mom is feeding the last 2 to hatch. Hopefully yours will pick up the feeding too!

Thanks everyone. The funny thing with not numbering my eggs as they were laid, is that I don't know if this chick is from egg #1 hatching a day late, or egg #2 hatching a day early....But then again I guess it doesn't really matter.

Update: Alright, so the chick is now well over 24 hrs old and is doing fantastic. :party3: He peeps throughout the day and squirms and wiggles around in the box. He is obviously being fed, as his crop is full. I'm so proud of the parents!!:D
Anyway...here are the pics, as promised.

Dont know if you saw the other post on this.... the dowel shouldnt be on the inside, it gives much less room for mom to incubate the eggs/bubs. If its not glued, push it back thru for dad to sit on, if its glued, get good clippers and clip it off.
Congrats on bub #1 by the way. They hatch from 17-21 days, so this could still be #1
does bub #1 have a name yet?

I tried pushing it out, thinking maybe it would slide through to the other side, but it's glued solid. So you suggest we cut it off? I guess that's our only option...but my only concern is that the mom might accidentilly hop onto her eggs/chick when entering the box, because as of now, she always steps onto the perch first.
And no, he/she still doesn't have a name. I'm thinking about waiting till it's feathers start coming in before I name it..but who knows:rolleyes: .

Update: Guess what?? We now have 2 little pink blobs :D! This morning we opened the nest box and found that bub #2 hatched last night. They are both doing well and I'll post pictures of them later today.
As for the dowel being inside the nest box...we tried clipping it off but it's just too thick. What makes it even harder, is that the way the box is attatched onto the cage, we can only open the door half way, so it's difficult to really do anything.
As the chicks grow and it gets crowded in there, we might take down the nest box and then try cutting it off, but it looks like it's staying for now.:embarrassed:

The 2 of them huddled next to each other. The one closest to the camera is the younger one, and you can clearly see his eyes. However, in the older one (although you can't see it in this pic) there are really no visible eyeballs, so I'm guessing he's a lutino or albino.:S

You don't actually have to push it through, you can take it out from the inside and then put it back on the outside. Can you wiggle the stick out from the inside? Just grab it and move it side to side and up and down. It might be stuck not glued. If that doesn't work try hammering it out. I think I had to do that with one of my boxes. But I would not attempt this with eggs and babes in the box. Wait until you can take them all out.

But what about baby #1? Do albinos/lutinos have no visible eyes when they're babies??

Baby birds hatch without visible eyes.
They start showing as the get older.
Baby budgies get them in a week I think.
You can tell when a Budgie is Ino because the eyes will look red.
If not they are not Ino.
However I want to say congrats to you and the mom and dad.
The babies are adorable. :D

I also picked up the oldest chick for the first time today. His/her eyes have started to open and he/she is definitely an ino.:D

How adorable!! I'm so glad your oldest is going to be a beautiful lutino. :) I don't think I've ever seen a lutino baby starting to get it's pins before!!
What a rewarding experience you must be having. I'm hoping that within the year, my budgies will be interested in breeding, but I'm going to leave that decision completely up to them considering they haven't even mated (or at least not that I know of!!).

You should post this as a new thread in the Budgie Health section as your questions will likely get buried among the pictures and other posts related to Budgie Goober's breeding events.
Is your budgie still having droppings? Or are they infrequent? If she is not continuing to pass droppings, or is having infrequent ones, then she may be egg bound. Also, does she seem distressed? If she seems really out of sorts, you will want to seek vet care. If she is egg bound, then this is an emergency situation...
Has she mated or is she simply laying eggs on her own?

Thanks.:) We have been watching for splayed legs (they're all fine) and we've also been cleaning their feet. About the nestbox..........It DEFINETELY needs to be cleaned:o. But the problem is that mom has lately not been leaving the box too often and even if she does the nest box is tied onto the cage, so I can't really remove it either. I'll have to remove the chicks and try to wipe the bottom with a damp cloth, and try to pick up as much poop as possible that way.:S

wow cool!
My budgie, Hershey, i think is going to lay an egg. She has layed 3 eggs before. For the past 3 days her body has been shaking back and forth. I don't know what the problem is. But she hasn't laid a egg yet! Also she has been sitting on the floor a lot. Please help me, is this normal? Or is Hershey sick! Please respond as soon as you can. Thanks.
I definitely agree with Budgiekin. There is a possibility that she may be eggbound, in which case you'd need to consult a vet.
And you'd probably want to make a seperate thread as well, so that it will get more notice.

To date we have 2 inos (the oldest and the youngest). The oldest is a lutino and will be 2 weeks old tomorrow. I really want to get individual shots of each bub, because they each have such different personalities and such unique colouring.
Anyway...Here are the pics:)

Thanks:). The two oldest chicks are able to put their legs under themselves, stand up and even walk around a bit. The two youngest ones still just have their legs to the side; squirming around is their only way of moving around.

Thanks. Hopefully your budgies will breed and you'll get the chance to experience raising baby budgies from birth.
Also, congrats on becoming a mod;) .
I hope so too. I guess I'll just have to be patient and see if they want to raise baby budgies or not!! I definitely wouldn't want to rob them of the opportunity to play all day long without having any obligations. :)
Thanks for the congrats!! :D

I took quite a few pics of the 2 oldest bubs today. :) I'll post each one's pics separately, as there are quite a few of them.
But there is something that has me completely confused. I don't understand how some of you are able to put down your bubs on any soft surface.:S Every time I've tried putting any of the bubs down, whether it be on my pants, shirt, the carpet, blanket, pillow, etc. - they get their tiny nails stuck in the threads of the fabric.
So we have obviously stopped doing this..

Lol...For everyone who likes the lutino, I've got good news. I can now say for certain that the youngest bub is a lutino as well.
Mom and dad are acting more like themselves. Mom is now occasionally eating on her own and the two of them spend almost half their days oustide of the nest box, together. They also have a new-found love for pumpkin seed.:)

But now I have a few questions:
1. It's obvious that one of the parents is carrying an ino gene. Is there any way to determine which one is carrying it? (other than breeding them with different partners).
2. Can anyone tell me what colour/mutation the second oldest bub will turn out, or is it still too early to know for sure?

Is the green feather thing normal for the mutation or do you just have a very special bird?;)

I'm really not sure about the green feather. I never actually did any resarch regarding that special single feather. I would like to just consider him special though. :) I mean, what budgie that is all one solid color has just one SINGLE different colored feather?
I'll try to get a picture of it, but I doubt it will be possible. It's very rare that I ever see it and am not even sure if it is always there. I do know though, that it came back after his moult!!
I guess I can call Banana's mutation, dark eyed clear with one green feather. ;)

Alright..so we had a bit of dilemma this morning.:S
While I was still asleep, my dad went to open the birds' cage door this morning. When he got there he says the oldest bub was out of the nest box. The bub just turned three weeks old today and barely has half of its body covered in feathers. The bub was sitting on a plastic covering that goes over the birdbath, to prevent splashing. It is set at an angle against the side of the cage, so it is very difficult to climb off of. We have no clue how long he/she was there for, but it is doing good now.
Isn't the bub way too young to be leaving the nestbox??
These are pics of him/her taken yesterday.

I'm glad you enjoyed reading it and best of luck to you, if you go ahead and breed.:)
As I have learned through this process, the dowel is supposed to be pushed out. I've seen people push it out all the way and some half way. Just keep an eye on the mom - if it seems that there isn't enough room for her to sit and incubate, or she's incubating too tightly, you might want to push it out all the way. Otherwise, you should be fine...
By outside, I'm assuming you mean that it is still attatched onto the cage. If that is the case then yes. What I did, was swing one of the cage doors inside. We then just tied the box onto the cage, where the door opening was.
Here's a pic to give you a better idea of where we placed it.

Wow...what a day it's been! I can honestly say that this was probably the best day I've spent with the budgies, since getting them almost a year ago.
First off, the the "babies" are almost fully grown and stunning.:) They still don't leave the nestbox on their own, but constantly have their heads or bodies peeking out of the hole. We brought the birds out and let them explore their cage, after which they went back into the nestbox, as they wished.
Whenever we are holding the chicks, the parents fly right to us, even if we're all the way across the room. So, if anything, this experience has bonded us even more with the parents.
The two oldest ones also had carrots for the first time today.:) The oldest one also tried a seed, but couldn't manage to crack it open.
And finally...today was the first time the chicks flew!! :D The 3 oldest ones all tried flying today, and the second oldest can now fly quite well. I can't believe they're flying before even leaving the nest box.
I'll have pics up soon.;)

Thanks!:)
I'm really bad with genetics/mutations, but I believe the reason that none of them are blue is because green is a dominant colour. And because mom is green, the green gene passed onto the babies as opposed to the blue.
Maybe someone with more knowledge could back me up on that?:S

Well everyone is still doing great. Everyone is now out of the nest box, only going in on rare occasions. Kirby however seems to spend most of his day in the box. I think it's because dad is absolutely OBSESSED with him:eek: (I'm 90% sure it's a he). He follows Kirby EVERYONE and constantly tries mating with him. So I've been spending a lot of one on one time with Kirby.
They can all pretty much fly too, although there are frequent crashes.:o
Mom and dad have mated several times as well. Yesterday we found an egg in the box, but it's gone today. I guess they ate the egg:S.
We definitely don't want anymore chicks, and we don't have fake eggs. Should we just shake/freeze/boil them and give them back to her?? (I've heard that none of these techniques are 100%). She didn't really seem too interested in the egg when she layed it, but I'm afraid if we remove the box, she'll just keep on laying.
Any advice from more experience breeders?

Well, I have some really sad news to tell you all.:(
The youngest of the birds just died, less than half an hour ago.:crying: :crying: :crying:
The whole bunch was out flying. They were all exploring when one of them flew very suddenly. They then all started flying. Pip (the youngest) flew head on into a wall and fell onto the couch. I could tell immediately that he probably wasn't going to make it. He couldn't move and just lay there on his belly. A minute later he fell off the couch and was desperately trying to fly. He could barely even move and kept rolling around the floor on his back and tummy. He finally just gave up, lay on his stomach and closed his eyes.:( :crying2: :crying: :sad3:
I feel sooooooooooooooooooo bad. This is the first bird that I've ever had die. I keep thinking that he would have still been alive if I just hadn't let them out.:(

Thank you so much for the great thread, I have only just become a member here and this was the first thread that I have read. I am sorry to hear about the lose of Pip, these types of accidents are common in younger birds and there is nothing that ou could have done to stop it. Just to answer a few of your questionbs posed through the thread.
he green gene is the dominant gene hence the two green babies, the to luttino babies are from the mother carrying the ino gene as the luttino is the green ino mutation, the Albino (white) gene is the mutation of the Blue.
Anyway congratulations on the success of breeding your budgies, I hope that I am as successful.

Thanks a lot for the answers to the questions and the comment.:)
BTW, Mom has since layed another six eggs, but we're not going to let any of them hatch. We haven't been able to get ahold of any fake eggs, so would freezing/boiling them do the trick? We're running out of time here......:o

Hey Everyone!
I've taken a realllllllly long break from the forum, and this is the first time I've checked in for quite a while.
I'm glad to hear that so many people have found this thread informative, educational or simply a good read. The babies are now well over a year old and spend their days happily with their parents. They always keep one another entertained and there is honestly never a dull moment in that cage.
I can truthfully say that the entire process of breeding my budgies was one of the most rewarding and amazing experiences I've gone through. Best of luck to anyone that is breeding - there is no shortage of great information and people on this site to help you along the way.
Feel free to let me know if there is anything I can help you with!

I guess I really just want to use this thread to post updates/pictures and to ask questions/seek advice...:)
cool!
my parakeets have 6 eggs and i don't know if its fertile because people said don't touch the egg or the chick would die
