I just got my new budgie Hercules. I am getting close to him quickly and was wondering when I will be able to let him fly around the room and get on my shoulder and do things like that. Do I have to train it first? Please help me soon! :D

I tried to do what the website said and my bird was just to hyper to do it. As soon as I layed it out on the washcloth it started to fly to the ceiling and kept on running into walls. I felt so bad for it. I just caught it and put it back in the cage. I have had it for a week or two for reference. Does anyone else have any good tecniques for a hyper, young bird?

Stick your hands in the cage. Keep them in there longer and longer each day. When, the lil' cutie gets used to it try hand-feeding him. Of course, make sure he is ready for this. When he is begin to pet him. Then, teach him the commands such as "up" and "down". These will be used to go on down and up on your finger. Make sure to get expert advice on this and maybe find some more info online. Good luck to you!!

Thanks! I'll try that. Hercules seems to hate my hand right now, but I'll try to get him used to it.

Heres an idea.
Stick out your pointer finger and slowly align it with the perch he's sitting on, then slowly move it towards him. When your finger is right under his belly move your finger towards him as if to push him off the perch. This will make him lose his balance and try to get back on the perch which will be replaced by your finger by now (Like my avatar). you can try to pat him with your thumb while he is still on your finger but do it very slowly. SLOW is the ket here. Do this daily and he will get used to this new soft moving perch (your finger).
What I do with Bugsy is I take him out of his cage and into the living room while on my finger...Dont worry his wings are clipped...Then i force him off onto the carpet (because he's so used to it now). He tries to walk away and explore but when I put my finger out and move it towards him he immediately runs to it because in the living room my finger is the only familiar thing outside his cage to him.

This finger thing is not working for me. I try to put my hand in the cage and it tries to get as far away from it as he possibly can. If I get close to him, he just ends up flying to another part of the cage. What do I do?

Your finger should be on his perch not in the air and just slide it towards him while still on the perch, it takes getting used o but soon enough he'll think its a moving perch.

you need to slow down, young hyper birds will take time.

start off with the hand in the cage, it takes a while, but he will come around
dont expect things to happen overnight.

some take months to hand tame
