Snowy keeps getting these wierd spikey feathers on the top of his head, they seem to be really ichy to he keeps scratching his head on his perch. Is this normal??? :S

Oh yeah, ths has to be moved....but anyway as an answer to your question, that's normal. It just means he is moulting. The spikey little feathers and new ones that are beginning to grow in on his head, they won't be spikey for much longer ^_^ At least that's what I think you're talking about..

Those spikey feathers are called pin feathers as they are new feathers that are growing in after a moult. There is a keratin sheath surrounding the new feather until it either falls off or is preened off. As those feathers grow in, your budgie may be quite irritable as they can be quite itchy. Sometimes when Kiwi has pin feathers, he lets me scratch him and flake off the sheaths.

:) agree with the others,pin feathers all 3 of mine are molting & have them i think there cute.

I crack the sheath of the feathers on my Quakers' head all the time. Once I crack 'em, he preens himself and gets all soft and beautiful again. It's teamwork!:rolleyes:

No, this is the only site I go to. I needed a budgie question answered-- that's how I found this site, and then I just got hooked...:o
