Hi
our budgie had this funny growth crusty thing on her beek for the longest time. it has recently fallen off is this weird? she seems to be more vocal since this happened chirping more often and being more soical. any ideas? she is the only budgie we have right now. she now seems to do this low chirp all the time when you are around her. for the longest time she would just tweet occasionaly.

she is older but i am not sure how old. we have had her for 2 years. she has no spots around her neck.

after reading the postings i will try get her to eat some fresh fruit and veg. in the past i have tried but she just hides in the corner away from it. i will try the mirror trick. how long should i leave the fresh stuff in the cage?

any help would be great thanks:budgie: :budgie:

Hi, welcome to the forums Millie! ;)
When a budgie's cere is crusted over, this means they are in breeding condition. Usually it falls off when they are passed this stage. Also maybe she is lonley? Make sure she has many toys and that you spend plenty of time with her.
Leave the fresh fruit and veg in the cage for about a day, don't let it go off.
Hope this helps!

I have a few hens that there cere get very crusty, and will grow outward. I was worried about one of them, it was getting so big that I took her to the vet. It is just caused by hormones, and will eventually fall off. Its been around 5 months, its still there, lol

Depending on what the crusty material looks like, it could be either nothing, or a mite infestation. If the crusty material takes on a honeycomb shaped appearance, then that would be a case of mites. Sometimes those crusties look like they fall off, but not always. As the other have already said, the other scenario could simply be that your budgie was in breeding condition in which case her cere would turn brown and can get quite crusty.

Is there any way you could post a picture?

Here is my sweetie Skyla when she had mites:

My budgies had that kind of thing as well. I also wondered if it had anything to do with breeding. I took the birds to an avian vet and he said this was caused by an iodine deficiency and wiped the crusty stuff off. Apparently this is quite common. He gave us some aqueous idone and we add a drop to their water a couple to three times a week. It worked and our oldest budgie has been laying infertile eggs (no male budgies here).
