I let them out as much as they want, the budgies don't like to come out of there cage as much but they like to hang on it, Georgie likes to be out all the time although I have to put him back in when its time to feed the baby he try's to steal her food and he is relentless :D

My flock use to come out everyday after 2, since that's when I come back home. I just leave the cage door open and they know their way in and out, in case they get hungry. Then, around 7 is veggie dinner time, and they make their way in, and spend the rest of their night playing with their toys.
Now that it's just Grace, and I'm home everyday, I take him out around 9 and leave him on my shoulder or on top of the labtop for the day, while feeding him in my palms :P He's currently preeing right now on top of the laptop lol
I place him back in around 7, the same time.

My birds live in large walk in fights pens. They have access to indoor living as well as outdoor living. The only time my birds are in cages is when they are breeding or going to shows.

If you must know I did. My birds are not tame and unless they start steping up and coming out on me they well not be allowed out. I have a cat that thinks they are lunch. As well as many many other things that well hurt them.
All my other parrots get out time with me or on play gym and they all step up to come out. They come out ever day.
So far the only time my budgies get out is on accident. lol It for their own safety. And so far one wont step up at all and the to the other one wont come out the door on my finger.

Put the cat away and budgie proof what you need to and let them out. You are probably having a hard time getting them tame because they see you as the "evil lady that keeps us locked up" (I am NOT saying you are) You know what is best for your budgies, in your house but in my opinion they NEED out time, tamed or not. If your other birds come out so can the budgies. Just because they are budgies, they shouldn't be restricted to that one area. They will trust you alot more if you acctually let them out of there more often and eventually they won't see the open cage door as such a big deal- mine come in and out as they please when I am home. It's like telling a kid no all the time, the first chance to do what they aren't allowed to they take it and go crazy. If it something that is common the crazy part goes away.
Just my thoughts so hope I didn't upset you.

Sorry still not letting them out till they well stay put. Can't do it my house is very cluttered cause is it small and to many things they can get hurt by. No place to put away stuff.
One day maybe they well be tame but untill then I want to keep them safe and alive.
The other birds are tame and stay on the bird safe areas. Trust me if you ever come to my house you would know I am doing the right thing.
In the mean time they are in a large cage that they do fly in and have lots of toys and they are very happy chatty cute budgies.

Personaly i cant see why you keep budgies in the first place if your house is that unsafe for them.
They are not that hard to tame. You make the decisions not them, they are not going to 'decide to be tame' for you.

Cause they are cute and cause once they are tame I can teach them their boundaries and let them out just like the other birds. So don't judge me when you have no idea.

I am not judging you, but you make it sound like they are just going to tame themselves. I dont see why you cant tame them?

Like I said one is stepping up nicely. Its the male Pepper but has yet been brave enough to come out on my hand. The other I think is female and is not liking the step up exercises yet.
I have been keeping birds for 15 plus years and I have been rehabing parrots for over 5 and I breed quakers so I do have a clue. lol
PS well ok so I get a towel and catch the budgies after covering tollet and litter box and let them lose in the bathroom. This well slow down the training cause I had to chase them around the cage to towel them. When I peeked in to look so far they are just sitting where I left them at. lol
Maybe in time they well like it. One still needs to get flight feathers too.

Lucky and Tweety get time out of cage everyday and they love it,I'm home everyday now, soon as I open the door here comes Lucky but Tweety is a different story,I have to get her out of the cage and then she loves it and
when I put them back in.... both be trying not to go back in.....it is funny.:D
Blinky is out every day for maybe 5/6 hours.Sparky is with him for about an hour and then goes back in her room. She goes straight in her cage but i leave the door open. She comes out when she feels like it so i can,t give you an exact amount of time.

My Hawkin can come out whenever we're both at home or both at work, but she doesn't really have any interest in doing so.

Banana and Peaches have their cage open whenever my boyfriend or I are home to watch them. They decide where they want to play and which cage they would like to travel to. They have many outside of the cage perches, toys and a play ground. They love it!! Lately, Banana has been testing out his new flights and has taken a few fly arounds of the room!! :)

Sid and Codi are out for most of the day, i just leave the door open and they do what they want (unless i go out). They have a 'play shelf' that is their favourite place in the room and spend most of the day up there playing with their toys. My bedroom door is left open but they never fly out. :) They used to have a climbing frame on top of their old cage which they also 'hung out' on, but the new cage is too big to fit it on top! I think they enjoy their freedom :)

I used to let them all out at once, but it was getting out of hand. So now, Oscar and Jasper get out in the morning while I make their breakfast. I can do this because they will return to the cage when I tell them to, occasionally I have to be more persistent with them. Then the girls get out, in the evening after I have cleaned the girls cages, I get them back in and then let Oscar and Jasper out again while I clean their cage. I feel bad not letting them all out at once but the big boys, especially Oscar are just too persistent at trying to mate.

Well, after I get my budgie and have it trained to some extent, I'm hoping that I can let it out for at least a few hours every day. I'm typically around the house every evening, and I think my bird should have the option of being out with me when I can keep an eye on it. I'll probably do what some others do and leave the cage door open when I'm around to watch the bird. Speaking of that, what's a good way to fasten (open or closed) vertically sliding doors?

I do not let my birds out either, actually they can come right to the door and fly out but they won't. I feed them treats at the door but they do not fly out. They do have a large flight cage and they know how to use it! They fly like little painted helicopters! Since I have had back surgery I'm not as fast, and I don't want to stress them out trying to herd them into their cage. I'm glad I've gotten the big cage. I wish I had the room and the money, I 'd get the biggest one possible, after my mansion of course! I actually think they feel afraid to go past the door. So I'm not going to try and force them to leave their safety zone.

My budgies will go in and out at will too. Well, one of them at least. Figaro (my oldest) will fly out and go in when she wants to. My younger, shyer budgie, Aloha, needs me to take her out.

I am embarrassed to say I don't let my birds out either. I have this huge flight cage and they seem to need the safety of the cage. I've given them the opportunity to fly in the bathroom but they won't come out of the cage.
One of my fears is that they will get behind the range or the frig and hurt themselves. My living room, dining room, and kitchen are all wide open and connected. I will leave the doors of the cage open tomorrow and see what happens. I have a playgym for them but I just need to glue the thing together. Other than that the place is bird proof.
Wish me luck! So they should just fly back to the cage and go in?

I just can't imagine not letting flying time out of the cage everday. Today, Banana actually flew from the downstairs living room to my room (which is also downstairs). He was able to see Peaches sitting on one of the outer cage ropes and I think that helped him get the courage to test his skills. It's just amazing to see how talented and smart they are once they're tame. It just wouldn't be the same experience for me or them without out of the cage time and flying time as well.

Don't be embararrassed. Atleast you want to do something about it. They really need free open cage time. Once this is done everyday (after a while) they will be so use to the cage open that it won't be such a big deal to them. You won't have a bunch of budgies flying in all directions on everything and you won't have to chase them down. My livingroom, dining room (where they are and where my computer is) and my kitchen are all one large area also. I keep their cages open whenever I am up and home and they come in and out as they please. Sometimes, they'll play on top of the cage or around them, sometimes they fly out and fly back but it's never out of hand. As far as trying to have them come out in the bathroom. They weren't use to the room so they won't feel it's safe to come out.
PS- mine were all clipped until each was tame.

I think for people who are afraid their budgies will just fly around the room when allowed open cage time should keep a door open while they are in the room for a period of time. You'll be surprised to see that they wont take advantage of that open door, but actually be afraid of venturing out. Once they feel comfortible, they will probably go outside the cage and test the waters without flying.
Unless you have extremely fiesty and very untame budgies, they shouldn't go crazy if a door is open for them to explore. It is more of a fear to them than an advantage to escape. Hope this helps all of you who are a bit nervous to allow out of the cage time for their budgies in fear of what might happen.

Thanks for posting. Perfectly said... they are really well behaved once you get them into the habit of having the door open for them. They'll know they can go outside later or another day and they won't care about the open door. Most of the time they spend exploring the area right outside of their cage.

I let my birds out everyday not as many hrs as I would like because of the dog, I like to wait till Max has been out for his walk to do his business then come in and make my breakfast. Wait for all stove stuff to cool off and then if I don't have to go to work like on a sat or sun, then they get there door open and it usually takes a little while but most of them come out lately Jessie had not been coming out went like 5 days without wanting to come out now she is the first one out. And Ducky has been more reluctant to come out go figure. But I think part of that is the new cage set up. I now have two flight cages joined together and most of the toy are in one and the other is real roomy for flight and I was thinking of getting them more toys but they are really likeing flying from perch to perch so I am leaving it like that except I am going to get a new perch for it that is like a tree branch as we had one and they really liked it but they chewed it like crazy so we need a new one. But all this to say My birds are out as much as I can allow. I can't let them out before work because of time to get them all back in most will step up on the stick and I can put back in but Jessie is harder to catch and it takes a few min some times 10 to 15 if she is not ready but I still think it is good for them to come out. And if your worried because they arent tame. don't worry to much try working on just getting them to step up on an extra perch and once they will do that its not that hard. 2 of my birds have flight and 2 don't but all were clipped when I got them and I think that really helped them to learn to step up cause they could not get back to the cage and wanted to. So I guess after all this rambling I let mine out a lot they are out from the time I get home from work after I take dog out till around 9 pm they go in on there own when they get tired I never have to try to get them in at night they go in on there own.

You guys have been so kind. I was afraid to admit they don't get out for fear of attack. You guys are an inspiration and I can't wait until tomorrow to see how they do. I don't have any toys for them to play with except for ping pong balls lol. I will have a play gym once I glue it together. But that is it for now. Oh I think I have a perch I can place outside the cage. Can't wait! Can't sleep either.

Thank you Tacey and Keet_tweet4. I woke up late as I was up way late. I still need to do some more bird proofing and yes I need more toys, chew toys I think as they just love to chew and I will put out millet. I will glue together the playgym before I let them out. It's a really good playgym that they ought to enjoy. I found the perch and placed it outside the cage. Should I place the playgym on top of the cage ya think. Wow this is exciting!

Have no fear! Budgie help is here! (SORRY_ I had to say that  )
Mindy, what kind of glue are you using to glue to playgym? Also, I wanted to add, there's nothing to fear (like you said you were). People are here to help other budgies (and the people that come with them :) ).
PS.don't be suprized if they don't venture out the first few times. I would hand some millet on the outside of the cage where they have to come out to reach it. Patience also.

I am using the glue that came with the playgym. It's a Penn-Plax.
I so badly want to let them out but I must ready the room first. I had it ready at one time but I must do it again. Yes I am nervous. I don't want them to chew on electrical chords so I must buy a few things that they can chew on and let them know they are there. I am hanging stuff on the outside of the cage. :)

I have one of those, too. :) I didn't glue it together because it seemed like it was pretty sturdy without it, and that it would be easier to clean if the pieces could be separated. Does anyone think that's going to be a problem? Does it have to get glued together?

I didn't use much glue myself. I wasn't going to glue it together either but parts of it would colapse and would only scare the birds away I thought to myself.

I got the medium sized play set for small birds, and it says to glue down the two vertical poles, but only those pieces. The bars that cross them don't get glued according to the instructions, and other pieces hook on or are already attached. I think for now, I'm going to leave it unglued, and see what happens when my bird tries it out. If it's got a bit too much give and the bird's freaked out by it or something, I can glue it on then.
