View Full Version : They Are Scared?
My pair of budgies are scared...I found an old bird bath in my closet that I used for "Clipper" when I had him...The clamps are broken so I had to put it on the floor of the cage I also put lots of lettuce and a little bit of water so they do not get drenched I read in a book its called a dew bath?

Haha thats funny
Oh those aren't budgies, people call them chickens. I just got my birds a bird bath, the kind you can hang outside the cage. They go into it through the main door of the cage which when raised allows them to go in the bath. My birds hate getting wet and especially hate it when they know im taking them to the bathroom to wash them up.

thats what i have to do joey, my budgies wont go near a bath ! so i fill a dish with greens & a little water and they love it ,tho most of the greens end up on the floor as they chuck it.
So should I take the top of the bath off than?Becuase there is a top?How long should I leave it in thier? Its only been in thier for a day....:(

i actually tried that with mine for a whole week, i left a birdbath in there at the bottom of the cage for a week (cleaned it everyday) and they just wouldnt go to use it. they were scared of it and are scared of the very bottom of the cage. yes my budgies are scared of the cage bottom, thell get about 6 inches from the bottom and thats as far as they will go.
Same as mine sometimes if I put vegetables and fruits on the side of the cage....once they pull it off it falls and they will not go to the bottom of the cage!

Casper and jasper get scared if I put anything in the floor of their cage and won't go down to get any food or water until I remove it. I tried putting a saucer with a little water in it on the bottom of the cage and after they flew around like crazy, (because they are still scared of me) they would just stare at it and would not go down to the food or water dish, after about 3-4 hours, i finally removed the saucer. I really want to get these 2 close to me, but I have tried everything I can think of. I talk to them daily, put my hand in the cage 4-5 times a day and they just fly around and start breathing fast and hard. Any suggestions on how i can get these 2 not only use to me, but use to taking bathes?

Have you tried misting your budgies with a clean water spray bottle (not ever used for chemicals..). You can put it on a fine spray and spray the water on your budgie from above (rather than directly at them). It encourages them to preen and give them a feel for water.
If you want to try to get them in a bath tub, you can try putting something in or near the water that may entice them over; it could be a piece of lettuce floating in the water, it could be a mirror or other favourite toy. :p It could even be a piece of millet clipped on the cage near where the bath tub is.
Yes I filled teh bath with lettuce leaves to the top!and only wet no water tehy still dont bathe!

when i put the bird bath in the aviary, no one used it. it took getting new birds that had used one before for the others to get interested. monkey see, monkey do, now they all bathe in it!

How important are these baths anyway. Mine rarely get baths and they seem to be just fine. Squeeky taught Budgie to roll around on wet lettuce though, but even that doesn't happen very often. They never did like the bath on the side of the cage thing. But Budgie will go into a shallow dish of water if she is in the mood and she will sit in my husbands hands and bath under a running faucet, again if she is in the mood. I did find that jiggling the water with my fingers would often get Budgie to go in. She won't share it though and chases off the other two if they try to get near. Squeeky is happy with the lettuce and spray bottle. She gets sprayed while she is rolling around on the lettuce. Pepper pretty much doesn't seem to care.
