Hi, I have 4 budgies they are all very young yet and I am not sure what they are. I am trying to figure out what they are boy or girls I am posting pics of them if anybody knows could you fill me in. thanks I don't have a full frontal pic of Jessie that I can find will take one tomorrow and post. But if anyone can check on the sex of the other three that would be great I think that Petrie and Sky are girls they have a white circle around the nostril and I have read that means a girl. Ducky being all yellow not sure how to tell with him/her and Jessie I am asuming is a boy as his cere seems to be turning blue just a hint though. thanks for looking. Also I will try to find a pic of Ducky tomorrow to post as well. thanks

Well that is truly very funny. I will tell you all why. Ok when I got my birds I had another one named Sophie and she was a real pretty green and yellow. But she was a rescue I got her from these people from craigslist, She was two years old and did not even have a name. And she sat in the corner of the house and no one ever paid her any mind. When I took her home she perked up as I had Jessie so they were side by side and sitting together and really preeening and I was in love with both of them. Ok so I am really new to having birds but I could not help myself I saw an ad from a lady that raises finches she had some parakeets that breeded so she needed to find homes for the babies cause there were to many in her avery, anyways that is the story she gave me I think she breeds them but did not want to get in trouble with craigslist. Anyhow I went to see them and came home with two more birds Petrie and Sky. Well I kept them in a seperate cage for about a week I know now should of been longer but I let them all get together but I kept them in their own cage at night. Then when I got the flight cage they were all so happy to get to play I did not have the heart to seperate them. The problem was that Sophie was not at all enjoying so many new friends and was showing som aggression to sky and petrie not Jessie as she loved Jessie. So I asked the lady at the bird shop she thought that maybe they were all boys and that was upsetting her. So I had to make a decision as I was not wanting Sophie to have to be alone as she was not willing to go into the cage with all threee of them and Jessie wanted to be with the others. So I put and ad on Craigslist to find a family that also had just one bird so Sophie would not go back to being alone if I found her a home. I did find her a great home with a lady who was wanting a friend for her green parakeet. And they really hit it off and I talk to the lady often and she lives just up the street so I can see her when I want. Then I got Ducky as I did not want an odd number now I kind of wish I had given it more time even though I would not have Ducky and She is so sweet and kind of nuts She eats her dinner in the food dish and won't let the others partake with her its really funny. When I saw her at the pet shop she was doing the same thing I thought it was so cute. But now knowing all girls, I have to laugh How am I ever going to get babies with all girls? :budgie:

They look happy and healthy female parakeets. You are doing a great job letting them enjoy their freedom.

Umm..I take that back- I think Duckie is a male. Did you use flash in the pic?

I'm thinking Ducky is a male too. The cere is the same color as my yellow Banana's when I first got him!!

Yup- 3 girls and a male. The reason I asked about the flash is because it alters the color of their cere, but regardless, I agree with Banana's mom.
lol....Poor Duckie has a alot of options..lol

Hi, again well it makes sence if Ducky is a male as he is always sitting on the other side of the cage at the moment the girls will sit together and preen and play and ducky is always by himself but I guess I am wondering if he is a male and all the rest are female is there going to be problems with having just one male with so many females? I really don't know they all seem to get along so well. Even Ducky he plays with the others a lot he its just that the girls seem more chummy with each other it may be that they have been here longer. not sure but also when The girls eat he waits and then he eats he rarly eats with them. and when he eats he gets into the bowl and won't let them eat its really very funny. But does anybody know will it be a problem when they reach maturity?

I've heard that having one male and two females could pose hazards. The reason for that is the females might try and fight for the male as a mate and those fights can result in injuries. I would keep a close eye out for any out of the ordinary behaviors for the time being. I'm sure that this doesn't happen in all cases with one male and two or more females, but it's just a good idea to look out for signs of a problem.

I had one male (Jazzy) with four females (Maui, Stormy, Sky and Jamy) for a while with no issues. He now unfortunetly thinks he's the pimp in the house but...oh well.
Just looks for any signs of problems. Your females are bonded toghether and get along already so just make sure it stays that way with him in there.

You crack me up :p
I don't know I have always read that you should have an even amount of male/female because females will fight over the male I would watch them seeing as the females are all bonded to each other and he is more to himself

He is and I agree with Laura and Bananasmomndad. I had Jazzy first, well before any females were added. I know have an even amount (4 girls, 4 boys):)

I am thinking maybe I should even it out and get a couple of males. I know that would even things up and maybe prevent fights cause I don't really want to seperate them to differnt cages not that I can't I have extra cages I just like it when they are all together. Are the males usually louder than the females cause Ducky is much louder in his song! Right now they are all sitting in a row on the perch they are so cute!

I HAD to even mine out since I have a slight case of ocd..LOL...4 girls and 4 boys. Just make sure you get one large cage for them and you'll be fine. Mine are a very close knit flock and love eachother alot. Males do sing and chatter more often but I love hearing them so I don't mind.

Please don't take this the wrong way but the cage is just big enough for the 4 of them. If you are going to get any more consider buying a large cage. I got mine for under $80.00 with a stand.

I think all of them are gorgeous females. :D
Ducky looks like a female, flash alone won't alter the cere color and make it look like a female even if it was indeed a male.
In time you will see Ducky's true colors, but for me I say female.
There is way too much white for Ducky to be a male.

I think its plenty of room it take up and entire dining room table so with one side for flight and the other for toys they would not be cramped with 2 more as they can get away from each other and I had 4 in just one of them and they were happy. I also let them out a lot so I am not worried about space if I need to I can ad another cage to it I have several of them the black one is in the garage and if I got another stand or table to set it on could at to the other two so the cage is not an issue for me. they all stay together all the time anyways. Usually all in a line on the big perch. So they have lots of room. The only issue I am having about the possiblity of another pair is noise level for my neighbors I like there chatter but not sure how the neighbors will like it.

It would make me happy if all were girls as I really did not want there to be problems and I am willing to get a couple more if needed to even it out but if all are girls I will just keep my flock as is. I went looking today for males but had no luck. They are all so happy together.

I think Males are more vocal then the females, but I did have a female that could out do any male with noise volume :D with my pair I have now the male is always singing and chattering and the female is quieter but when she squawks she is much louder then he is.

That is good to know as Ducky is quite loud she is the singer in the group or I should say the one to start the singing they all sing. She is so happy. So I can see what you mean that your female can out sing your male. Its funny they all have such differnt personalities! Ducky is the firest to try anything new today I went and got some parsley for them to try and She was to first to peck at it but noe of them actually ate any. :( Well thanks for the info:budgie:

Just keep trying it, might take sometime maybe if Ducky eats it the others will follow out of my two only the female will try anything new but I am hoping the male will follow her lead

Keep offering it everyday- just hang it in the cage- mine didn't eat it the first day either. Now they all do nuts when I add it.
