You always see blue, white, yellow, etc. budgies in pet shops, but rarely see violet ones even though violet is the dominant color. Why is that?

See them a lot at bird fairs but not so much in petshops.

Violet budgies aren't rare but they are a little harder to find in pet stores. Searching for violets with breeders may be a little easier.
My Dallas had a bit of violet in her, around her neck and back :)

I think ones that show a true violet are somewhat rare, but not too hard to find. More common i think are ones with the single violet factor, but do not show up as pure violet. Both my budgies appear to have a violet factor, but it's not completely noticeable.

I havn't seen many around, I must admit.
My aviary budgie, Bella is sort of a "violety" colour.

Bird Sales, Bird Fairs, Bird Marts are events set up usually by bird clubs for their members (and anyone who wants to buy tables) to sell anything and everything that has to do with birds - birds, cages, feed, toys, etc. You are more likely to find really different speices of birds offered at these events that are never offered for sale at pet shops.
Here is the link to the Fort Worth Bird Mart. http://www.thebirdmart.com This event is held twice a year - once in the spring and once in the fall.
The prices for birds and equipment is usually MUCH less than what you will find at ANY pet store or buying through any catalog!

I bought my violet English Budgie at a local bird fair. She (or he) was the only one in a flock of about 20 birds! I had to have her since purple is my favorite color. She is a sweetie.

pipp4's bird is not violet, but cobalt, which is quite common.

I talked to the WA state Budgerigar people trying to find one, and was told they are not very common, they are more expensive and most people mistake cobalts for violets.
One lady said she was breeding them, but doesn't any longer.
Still, they are very pretty.

My Whitey Ford is mostly a white English but he has violet markings and is quite pretty. I don't think that this combo is common. :budgie:

i always like this hen of mine (rip) she was mostly white (more white on her back) , but had the cinnamon and blue markings, she would have even more pretty had she been violet!
