Are you prepared for the costs of an emergency vet visit for your budgie(s)?
If one of your precious budgies gets sick or injured, do you have the money to pay for the veterinarian care? In March of 2005, I decided to start what I call an "Emergency Budgie Fund". The reason I decided to do that was because one of my budgies, Apollo, unfortunately had a rather serious emergency. The vet suggested exploratory surgery to find out what was wrong. Following the surgery (which was inconclusive), he sadly didn't make it out of recovery so we wanted to find out why. The vet performed a necropsy to see if she could determine the cause of his death. (The necropsy was not conclusive either.) Then we decided to have our sweet little Apollo cremated; this was also taken care of by the animal hospital. Before we knew it, we had a pretty chunky vet bill.
Because of that experience, I now put money (every two weeks) into one of my savings accounts in case of a budgie emergency. My budgies are important to me so I don't want money to be the deciding factor of whether my budgies get veterinarian care or not.
This became all too important when my precious Skyla developed a tumour under her wing just recently. We had two options; the first was to have her wing amputated, and the second was to let the tumour run its course and euthanize her when it became too large. As many of you may already know, I opted for the amputation, which was quite an expensive procedure.
Do you think you would consider starting such a fund yourself?
