View Full Version : Bowel shutting down?

Green is not getting any better, she is lying on the bottom of her cage on her side. At the moment she is also snoozing. As the days go on, she seems to be doing the toilet less. My Mum mentioned that her bowels may be shutting down but im not sure :S . Does this actually happen? If so, has it happened to any of your budgies? Please help, i don't know what to do!
She is also breathing very heavily too.

I don't know about the bowels, but I do think that she's not going to last much longer, sorry to say. That's exactly how all of my previous budgies were right before they passed away. :( This is also just my opinion, but I feel that the hassle of getting her to the vet would also do more harm than good at this point too. Best of luck. :)

I am so sorry that she is struggling....it must be so horrible to have to see her like that. I can't imagine what you must be feeling....helpless, worried... My thoughts are with you during this difficult time Kelly. All I can say is do your best to make her comfortable, which I am sure you are already doing. I think at this point you have done everything you can for your little sweetie.

Would this maybe be an appropriate time to have her euthanized so she doesn't continue to suffer? I think we can safely say that Green's situation does not sound promising. She has been through a lot. :(

Oh Kelly27 my heart goes out to you. Yes I too think the end is near. However you can take her to a vet and have her "put her to sleep". I did this with my last budgie that passed as I found her suffering going on too long. It cost me $35.00 dollars at the time. It was an avian vet.

I wish you luck and my prayers are with Green.

During our last visit to the vet, the vet mentioned that if she was'nt better by today (Monday) then we were to call it a day. My Mum is very attached to her and wants to hang on to her forever. I know it's not my decision to put her to sleep but whenever i mention it, my Mum ignores the idea.
I cant stand seeing her like this but i cant do anything.

I know how your mom feels. I'd never want any of my budgies to pass, but sometimes it's better they do so they don't have to suffer. We really don't know just how much pain our babies are in right before they pass away. They can't express their pain to us so we can't truely understand. It's so sad when you think about it. :(

We all hope for a peaceful end but it is not to be for some. It is the last act of kindest we can show our animals friends.....to end their pain. You have good friends in the budgie forum who at least understand how much a little puff of feathers can touch your heart.

Thinking of you and your Mum, Dotty

If my Mum decides against having her put to sleep, how much longer do you reckon Green will have? She is still eating & drinking.

If she is eating and drinking no one can say for sure. I am wondering what is really going on with Green.

Yes, the bowels can pretty much 'shut down'...once they are near the end. Or she might only be producing urates (white stuff) instead of normal stool. :(

How is she today? And I would have to agree...if she looks like she is in pain or suffering, putting her down would be the best thing to do, if you and your Mum love her so much. But she's eating and drinking still? And lying down on her side at other times? Try going to the vet again...does he/she know exactly what the problem is? It may be a tumour, but if she's till eating/drinking...I hope she gets better! Good luck!

At the moment she is lying on her side on the bottom of her cage. Her legs have completley stiffened up and she cannot use them at all. Also from the top of her tail, her body seems to be getting stiff. My mum is still giving her the painkillers the vet perscribed. She seems to be eating and drinking fine, although she uses her stomach to get across to the seed + water dishies. I love her so much but my Mum is certain that she will be fine soon and up on the perch. I know this is'nt gonna happen :( .

That's so sad. Hopefully the painkillers are taking away some of the pain. :(

She does'nt seem to be in pain from my point of view but who knows how she feels? I got quite upset last night, just watching her :crying2:. She was using her stomach to slide along the cage floor to reach her food + water dishies.
Green is fab budgie and she does'nt deserve ANY of this.
I worry about her during the night too :( .

I would beg my mom to have her put to sleep. it just isn't fair to her. Green can't tell you that she wants to go but what if she is wishing to be put out of this.

She probaly is, she does'nt wanna sit on the floor all the time. She wants to be like a proper budgie, flying, chirping etc. I just want her to be happy.

Green was fine this morning, she was eating and drinking.
Then i went out for a while and came back and noticed she was'nt breathing. She died this afternoon. I miss her so much :( . But in a way, im relieved. I know that now, she will be sitting in heaven with her man - Bert.

Oh Kelly! My thoughts are with you sweety. And yes, in some ways it is a relief knowing that she is not suffering, but on the other hand, not having her around is certainly upsetting. I am thinking of you. May she rest in peace.

I'm so touched by this thread, at least Green had a happy life. You did all you could.

We buried her today, and i keep thinking "Oh, lets go talk to Green" or "I wonder what Green is doing". I was always bothering her! It's just weird without her around, she was a big part of my everyday life.

I know exactly what you mean. It takes a while for it to sink in that she is gone....I know it did with my budgie Apollo. I thought about him all the time. It takes some time to adjust to their absence that is for sure....
