Because its winter here and my breeding budgies outside go in the nest box together and the cage is too big to bring inside, does anyone know an idea to keep the cage a bit warmer for them?:S

I'm pretty sure you can purchase heaters especially designed to go in aviaries. I don't have one though so can't recommend a particular brand or anything.

You can cover it with plastic to keep it warmer along with an electric radiator heater to keep the temperature above 50 degrees at night. A tarp will work fine as long as it is durable enough to keep the wind from passing through it, also some sand on the ground will keep the temperature down since it is used to melt snow after all and it can easily be washed away. Finally, along with wooden aviaries come mites, so be careful.

On the few days of cold weather we have in South Florida, I use the heavy guage clear (?) plastic material I buy at my local hardware store. If you are in for a long seige of cold weather and/or snow, I'd recommend bringing them in. You'll still have plenty of time, when it warms up a bit, to breed them.

BTW, where are you located? We are so lucky, aside from hurricanes, here in South Florida, weather wise. Our summers ARE hot and humid but our winters are very mild. I work outside and am permitted to wear short pants/uniforms to work. I think I've worn long pants to work perhaps 7 or 8 days in the last 14 years. But, we do suffer in the heat of Summer!

Like I said before, use a tarp or some durable plastic to cover the outer sides of the cage covering the entire aviary, put sand on the ground to melt any ice or just to keep the bottom warmer, or use an electric radiator heater. Do anything that will keep the temperature above 50 degrees. Also make sure you have a very very warm place they can go into at night and be warm without having them use their body to warm themselves up, use some cottons or straws, anything warm.

i use a ceramic heater light on top of the aviary, and i have the roll up type of blinds that i close each night. if you cant put the lamp ontop, they usually have a big clip that you could attach to the side. (its the type of lamp that you would use on reptiles)

My outside aviaries where I have most of my budgies are protected from the cold and wind by having a outside blind that I pull down. Inside the aviary just have plenty of
hollow logs and branches for them to perch in.
Where I live in Australia in NE Victoria the temperature drops down to -5degrees and that is where there is no snow and my budgies survive without having to add heating but that is a personal choice.
They are pretty tough little fellows as they are native birds of this country.
As suggested you could also put plastic over the cages it will all do the same also leave their nest boxes in as added shelter.:budgie: :budgie: :budgie: :budgie:
