I recently bought some pedicure type perches for my budgie and tiel cages, they were a little more expensive but it says its good for many things like trimming nails, arthritis, better for there feet etc I put one in each cage, just wondering if anyone else uses them and do you think that they really do the job they say they do? I also keep there regular perches in there as well but they seem to prefer the pedicure perches

Hi ronsig thanks for the info :)
that topic was about trimming nails I was asking if people use the perches and if they really do what they say they do, more so as in good for the feet etc, not so much for nail trimming

:budgie: I heard they don't help much and are bad for the skin on their feet.

can't say for sure though
personally i don't use them and just clip their nails when they get too long.

I have never had bad luck with pedicure perches, not with budgies or others. If the birds use them too much and make the skin raw, you just move the perch to a lower location in the cage and voila! They use it less frequently and don't have raw feet. I just about NEVER have to trim nails and it's wonderful! We like lava rocks best (b/c that's what the birds like) but the concrete ones are pretty good as well. For caged birds, I DO recommed pedicure perches.

thanks for the responses, I don't think I have to worry about the feet being raw there not the only perches they use :)
I will have to look into the lava rocks, I have never heard of them
I was going to go with the concrete ones but then I read there not good, so I don't know I guess its all a matter of opinion

I am curious about the lava rocks. Do you go to an aquarium store and buy the rocks like you would for a fish tank? Is it really safe for the birds to eat?

im also interested in the concrete perch, would it be possible to make your own after all they are just concrete right !!!!, or would they be harmful to the birds

I use lava rocks for Baby. They are in the bird aisle here though.

I was wondering that as well since I've been considering buying one. They are just sooo expensive in comparison to all other perches, by at least three times! If enough people have had positive experiences with them, I might decide to try it out. :)

I don't know if they have lava rocks here I have never seen them in a pet store around me, maybe a bigger one might have them.

Petsupermarket, petco and petsmart would have them. You would be able to order them too. Baby uses it for beak maintainance. (besides the mineral block and cuttle bone).

As far as the perches, variety is best. Just give them choices...just like how we wouldn't want to sit in the same chair all the time they don't want the same perch everytime...:) Mine have different size wooden ones, natural branches, some of those "mineral"/chalky perches, some swings, ladders and some almost like these:

PS> DO NOT use those sand paper perch covers though! They do more damage then good!

I just got something similar to those perches at a smaller pet store here, we do have a petsmart not to far from here maybe I will check there for more variety :)

Hey guys, I sell the lava rock perches, they are something like $6 and change. E-mail me if you want pics or details on ordering: andrea@bonsaibirds.com

pedicure perches great to have. You should place them some where in the middle or bottom, do not place it at the top where they usually sit because if they stand on them too long they get sore littl feet. You should also havea rope perch in there, birds like to stand on rope perches because they are nice comfortable, often there sleeping perch. As well as its good to have a natural perch just to provide different textures and etc. dowels are not good for birds. Its ok to keep one or two inside but it is bad to have all dowels if they stand on the same size perch and same textered perch their feet will get stuck to that position and be difficult to stand in other place(thats a severe case how ever) In my current budgies cage i have one dowel perch, one sisal rope perch and a pedicure perch.

thanks for sharing that meghan I didn't realize dowel perches were that bad I have two of them in mine as well as a pedicure perch and a small rope one I think I should take one of the dowel perches out and just keep one. this site is great I learn something new everyday :)

I keep the rough perch at the water dish. That way they have to get on it to get water but don't need to stay on it for long.

I have a small sand perch in my cage. I'm not sure how much good it does as I only got it recently. The only time I've caught my girls using it excessivly was when they were molting. They would rub their heads against it to relieve the itching. I also have a rope perch and two dowel perches. However, they are the wavy ones so they have a couple different diamaters to choose from.

I forgot, I have a cuttlebone perch too. My bird love it.

I have a rope perch, a pedicure perch in a swing, and dowels...one of my birds constanly hangs upside down from the top of the cage, it's her favorite place to be, does that mean anything?

I invested in one today and Peaches has decided that it is her favorite perch! I will let you all know if I notice any benefits from it. :)

pedicure perches

i no longer buy them as they are expensive for what they actually achieve and the birds just ripped them up anyway, a complete waste of money for what they are, though having a large self-built cage made from wood certainly hélps with the trimming of both nails and beaks...

I think you are talking about calcium perches and those are meant to be chewed up.

Babyluv your new siggy is great :) did you do it yourself?
I have replaced the small dowel perch with various different perches rope, pedicure, calcium etc, and they seem to be enjoying them, its a little more expensive but well worth it to keep them all happy.

Thanks! Yup-did it last night. I am going to take a group pic of all 8 on my arm-when Limu is out of quarantine-maybe even Baby too-

I agree 100%. If you can't go all out to help make them comfortable it makes no sense to even have them. It hasn't happen so far, but I'll go broke before they go unattended to.;)
