Hi,
My mom and I have decided on building an aviary. My dad would build it when he was off from work. We went to home depot and found the wood that we would use, but I don't know where to get the screen. Now my questions are, What kinds of metal poisoning is there? What are the bird safe metals , and Where can I get it? Isn't led and zinc poisonus to them?
Thank you

Here are two links on metals:

http://www.avianweb.com/heavymetalpoisoning.html (http://www.multiscope.com/hotspot/metals.htm)
Lead and Zinc are NOT safe- stainless steel is.

I already looked an stainless steal is very expensive, and they don't make any stainless steal mesh/chicken wire for the aviaries. Tin steel and iron should be okay, right?

Tin (not galvanized), steel and iron (not treated with antirust paints) are not toxic to birds.

Tin (not galvanized)
steel (not treated with antirust paints)
iron (not treated with antirust paints)
are ok. Neither can have that coating.

1" x 1/2" welded wire is the best to use for an aviary. It is heavy enough to hold up to owls, hawks, cats, dogs, coons and other animals of pray when they hit it and/or climb on it. It is not inexpensive and I went with 2nds that I picked up in 100' rolls at a flea market. I think if you search around on the internet you might be able to find it.
If you want to see the wire I am talking about go to Custom Cage Works http://www.customcageworks.com This is the same wire they use some of it is of different hole size.

I read on yahoo that if there is zinc on the wire mesh, then you can coat it with vingar and let that sit for about 1/2 an hour, then hose it down and you will be fine. Is that true?

Most people use hardware cloth that has been washed with vinegar... I used it in my aviary. I've had my aviary for years now, with no problems. I had originally looked into the aviary wire sold online, and its just too expensive ( and still is in my opinion) Its a decision you will have to make yourself though. This will be my only post on here, as I dont have the energy to argue with members about this again. :)

Really I was thinking about using the ones in a hardware store, and I agree with you with the vinigar and that the aviary wire online is too expensive! I am just worried that the wire sold in a hardware store has lead in it.

I looked at the web site and got a quote for a cage, but I noticed that they offer galvanized wire or pvc coated? Is there something that they do to the materials to make them safe? My husband wants me to buy the wire and a spot welder and build the panels myself!!!!
What I asked for are panels with the connecters so I could take the cage apart and it can be shipped flat.
