I bought the Birds USA 2007 Edition today and came across a list of all foods to avoid for budgies or any other species of bird. Just thought I would post this to inform new members or anyone else who may not know about all the dangerous foods that could harm their budgies.

Foods to avoid

Chocolate
Caffeine
Acocado
Alcohol (That should be a given!!)
Peanuts
Apple Seeds
Stone Fruit Pits
Raw Dairy (Milk, Cheese and Ice Cream)
Raw Onions
Rhubarb
Raw Mushrooms
Salty Foods
Junk Food
Beef

If anyone else knows any more foods that should be avoided, feel free to let us all know!! :)

I was wondering about the peanuts also. Maybe they were just referring to peanuts that you can crack open, and are specifically intended for human consumption.

Maybe they are ok for larger species? I have a friend with an amazon and we tried the food before (don't laugh- I tried my budgies and tiels food too..lol) The peanut is in its shell but it tasted like a regular peanut- just raw and no salt. I guess that is what they mean..Either way mine don't get that, although my tiel has before..

does anyone know if strawberries are okay or not? I just brought several of them today and they're so big and sweet, I would really like my budgies to have some if its safe for them n.n;;

I believe the main concern with strawberries is that store-bought strawberries have more pesticides in them than any other fruit/berry, and that water alone isn't enough to clean them. There's some sort of fruit wash you can get to clean them though, and of course home grown or organic strawberries wouldn't have this problem.

I have two strawberry plants in a big pot and can't wait until they finally produce strawberries!!! :D I know Peaches will give them a try because she will try everything once. It's Banana that I might have trouble with though!! He's extremely picky.

We had some two..they made TWO fruits-by the time they were ripe the birds (outside) picked them down to nothing...:o

Here is more info of why not to feed peanuts:
Peanuts : Peanuts, fresh peanuts, bulk peanut butter, or peanut butter from health food store can contain a fatal toxin called mycotoxin which is produced from fungus. Commercial brands are monitored for this toxin. Use only good quality commercial peanuts and peanut butter for your birds.
