I'm going out of town for the weekend, and there is no one to watch my birds. They have a problem with pooping in their water dish, so I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what I can do so they don't have to drink poopey water all weekend.

Can you not leave them with a neighbour or a friend or something?

That's what I was going to say. Is there a relative or a friend you can leave them with? Or even a bird/pet store that accepts birds. I guess you could even have a close friend or family member stop by the house to check up on them. Those would be the best options so they'd get fresh food and water daily. If you must leave them alone, I guess you'll just have to hope for the best. :D

If you can at all avoid it, leave your budgies with someone. It is never a good idea to leave them alone. If they get a nail caught on something or if they have a night fright for example, there won't be anyone around to look after them and make sure they are okay. Would a friend look after them for you??

I would also say leave them with someone you can trust. But if you cant do that, buy them a water bottle you can hang outside the cage with a tube going inside the cage, kind of like what raps and rabbits use but a lot smaller. and for food will be hard because budgies leave the seed shells inside the food cups. id say drop 3 or 4 strands of millit at the bottom of the cage and make sure they have a lot of food, add another larger food cup if you have one. If it's just the weekend then this should be enough, make sure you clean out their cage very well when you get back tho, even a food cup that looks full may still be empty because of the seed shells they leave behind.

I would think just a weekend they would be ok. Leave a light on nearby, and do as sugested, leave some millet, and extra food dish, and add a water bottle. Plus leave their regular water bowl. you will be amaized at how quickly they will use the bottle. maybe leave a radio, or tv on low for them.
What do you mean by a water bottle? Could you post a pic?

There should really be no problem with leaving the birds for a couple of days provided, as others have suggested, you leave them enough food. On the matter of the water, you might want to try an outside-the-cage watering tube that has a small trough-like part that goes through the bars into the cage. The company PLANIT makes them. I use these regularly on my breeding cages. Also, you might rig up something to shield the existing water holder.
You might Google Planit and see the photos of the watering tubes I mentioned, to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.
Good luck.

you should try them, it makes the cage a lot cleaner, then they learn that the bowl is for bathing! lol

thanks for the suggestions. As it turns out my brother is going to be able to check in on them. I didn't think he would be able to, but he can so its going to be alright.

They already bathe in them!
And Joey, I have 1 of them, but with a smaller opening, as well as 2 feeders like that as well.

I don't like them for budgies because it's not a natural method they know to drink in. So alot of budgies would have trouble figuiring them out. I much prefer the tube ones that have a small dish part that pokes through the bars, clean and designed for our feathered friends. ;)

all of my birds have never had a problem with using them. birds are smarter than a lot of people give credit to. budgies have been know to find water in the straingest places. and when every breeder i know uses them too, i feel very confident in them. plus, they are cleaner, thats what is the most important thing!
