View Full Version : New Cages On The Way!

I don't think i've ever posted about my cage ordeal here so i will now. In January the tiels got a "good" quality large cage:

I'm sure many of you will recognise this type of cage, it's extremely popular.

I was SO happy to finally have one as i had never seen them in Australia before and this one was on sale. In March i purchased a second one for the budgies because i loved it so much. Only two weeks after getting the second cage, the tiels cage went rusty in a joint. It took over a week of phoning the store and speaking to different people to get them to replace it for a new one. The replaced cage is cage number three.

Then shortly afterwards i noticed a small amount of rust under the door wires on the budgies cage.

So that's two cages that have rusted within just a few months, i was not happy. I emailed the manufacturer. At first they seemed concerned and helpful but i then received an email telling be that, despite the fact that the cages are kept indoors, out of harsh conditions, and are never soaked or left wet, the rust was surface rust and a fault of my own, they couldn't do anything about it. As the rust is such a small amount and clearly inaccessable to the budgies, i gave up.

Within just a few more weeks, suprise suprise, the tiel cage was rusting in a joint!

THREE cages, all from the same place, all the same make, rusting within barely months of me purchasing them. I was furious! This time i emailed the head of the company i bought the cages from, demanding a refund on both cages i currently have. At first they were helpful and after a couple of weeks of emailing information back and forth i was told the store would phone me in a few days. They didn't. I emailed the company back asking WHY i hadn't been called and i was ignored. It would seem that my emails to both the manufacturer and the company were being 100% ignored. Again, with such a small amount of rust in an inaccessable place, i was ready to give up.

There's more! On tuesday i was home sick from school and when getting the budgies out to play i noticed that the paint on the frame of the cage was chipping.
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Other/June52007-birdsandcagefaults027Cust.jpg
This was the last straw. I emailed the company again and dropped the magic words: "If my money is not refunded, i will be contacting consumer affairs (fair trading). I am extremely unhappy with the service i have received."

Well, that did the trick. Within 5 minutes of sending this email i received a reply from the company and all of a sudden they whole heartedly agreed that my money should be refunded. :p Go me! The sales manager contacted the store manager, and they have agreed to refund my money.

Obviously i can't take the cages back until the birdies have new houses so with the money i will be getting from the refund (i've borrowed from dad for now) plus a little more we've ordered two black POWDER COATED versions of the cages, they are much better designed than the ones i've been having trouble with. They should hopefully arrive tomorrow, or early next week!

These are some pics of a white version of the cages i've ordered:

You can see how the powder coated looks different to my old plastic coated ones.

And they're the slightly larger two door versions too, which is great!

Anyway, i'm looking forward to getting my new cages and even more to taking back the old ones, i've really not had a lot of luck with this pet store i got the cages from, grrr. I definitely won't be visiting that particular store again. :p

Wow I like that cage allot Bea, where did you order it from and how many budgies would you say it was suited for?

I ordered them off eBay but an American site that sells them for a fantastic price is:
http://www.featherfarm.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=40
That's a BRILLIANT price, and i don't know if you're in the lower 48 states, lol, but then you get free shipping which is cool (i wish i lived in America now). :p

You could fit 4-6 budgies in the cage, depending on how much time they get out of the cage. :D

The one you showed last doesn't have the platform and build in ladders like the one you first showed??

What a pain some people can be! But I'm sure the new cages will make up for it. They are sooooooo nice! Lucky birds. :)

Half way through reading your post I started thinking "why aren't the cages powder coated?" then I see your new ones are. I actually assumed all cages were powder coated.

For anyone that has this same problem but can't get a refund or maybe the cages are just old, I'd suggest contacting some local automotive garages and try to find a place that does powder coating. It isn't too expensive, much less than the cost of most of those giant cages. I've never done a cage, but the wheel of a car is about $15 - $20 so I'd assume less than $100 for an entire cage and you can pick the color too!

I'm glad the refunded your money, are the new cages made by the same company?

I'm not sure, i'll tell you when i get them (hopefully today). I've spoken to lots of other aussies about this powder coated version of the cage, and they've only had good things to say about it!

The platform and ladders weren't included in the list of stuff included with my cages either, so i'm not certain if they'll come with it. I was planning on taking them out anyway. :P If you want one with the platforms, check eBay.

That is the same cage i have for my tiels! You will love it. the black and green powder coat is slightly better because the paint doesn't chip off quite as easily. If you would like any better pictures with my tiels in it feel free to pm me or whatever. Its a great cage! My cage came with 2 platforms, 2 ladders, and 2 large feed dishes. I am un sure of the brand as i got it form a petstore. but its reall good quality i think atleast ive only had it since december and so far real good and it looks teh exact same as that too. The only thing you have to watch out for is to make sure the screws on the doors are tight. Once i opened the door to the cage and the whole door just about came off. IM not sure if the tiels unscrewed it if it was from opening and closing the doors so much or if the people at the ptestore didn't tighten it properly but just something to watch out for its easy enough to fix. the rest of the screws are in places where are only accesible to birds if theyw ere outside the cage so you only have to worrey about the doors.

Cages arrived today - first one we open, exposed metal EVERYWHERE! Little spots and parts not powder coated properly just waiting to rust. And on one of the side panels it's barely powdercoated, it looks dull and feels different to the rest of the cage. Dad's telling me that my expectations of a perfect cage are unrealistic and that i should just accept it but I WILL NOT!! This cage we've opened is WORSE than the ones i'm taking back. I'm going to have to contact the eBay seller and see what to do about it. I'm so angry!!!

I'm curious, is this normal for the large cages? I'd probably just try to get some money back and use it to have it powder coated on your own.

We wouldn't be able to get any money back without sending the cages back. We've not been able to find any powder coating places nearby either, we had a look earlier when we discovered the cages were dodgy. I wouldn't say this is normal for the large cages, but it would seem that both sources i've bought from have possibly been selling factory rejects.

If anywhere local sold anything good, i wouldn't use eBay either. But everything here is crap and over priced.

Bea i don't know if this will be in your price range but this is the site i got mine from. playforms and all. The sell was very kind. I will admit there was damage but with such a long distance. I don't know if they will ship over there but u will have to ask.

It's exactly the same price and type as the cages i ordered, expect shipping (if they would even ship to Australia) would be more. :) Hopefully i can get replacements that are in better condition...

Well good luck. Thats why i don't like ebay myself. I'd still email the person i listed just in case. She is a real sweetie. Every time i emailed her she got back to me as soon as humanly possible lol.
